Breathe, Caroline. Just breathe. This is ridiculous! I stare down at the invitation and the dress. Blue always had been my favorite color... No, I will not give in to temptation. I don't care if Klaus spends his money on me, he can waste it all he wants. I stare at the dress and decide it's best to shove it into my closet, out of sight. I look at the invitation, it was a nice gesture, I think. I leave the invitation on my bed and head out to the grill to meet up with Elena.

She received an invitation from Klaus's mother, Esther, to meet up with her and talk in private. I glance over at the door and see Rebecca enter in, she heads over to Matt and hands him an invitation! I glare at the sight. I felt bile rise in my throat at the thought of the two of them together. I had just told Elena I wasn't going to the gala, but the sight of Matt being invited by HER made my conscience fade away into the deepest, darkest part of my mind.

I head back to my house to prepare for the gala, I scour my closet desperately, trying to find something appropriate for something so formal. I look at my Miss Mystic Falls dress and sigh, even it wasn't formal enough. My gaze falls on the box with Klaus's gift in it. I grab it, scoffing as I walk over to my bed to put it on. I slip it on and find a pair of heels with the dress. I slip the shoes on and walk over to my mirror and fix my hair up nicely. When I was ready, I started feeling nervous about going. I went anyway.

Klaus was talking to someone when I entered, but his eyes soon found mine. He walked towards me. "Good evening." He said. I panicked. "I need a drink." I said before turning and walking away. Later that night, I went outside for some fresh air, I stood, staring a horse. It was a beautiful paint horse. "You like horses." Klaus said, though I thought he meant it as a question, he said it like it was a known fact. He was right, I loved horses. I ignored his question or statement. "I'm not talking to you until you tell me why you invited me here." I stated. "I fancy you." He said it like it was the most natural thing in the whole world. "That so hard to believe?" He asked. "Yes." I state. "Why? You're beautiful, you're strong, you're full of light. I enjoy you." I turned my head to the side. "Well I'm spoken for by Tyler." "I thought you two ended things." "Yeah, because of you and your freaky sire bond with him." He smirked. "So, you aren't spoken for," He turned towards the horse. "You know, horses are the opposite of people; they're loyal. My father hunted me for a thousand years and the closest he ever came was the day he killed my favorite horse. He severed its neck with a sword as a warning." "Did you ever consider sitting down with your father and talking it out?" "I'm afraid my relationship with my father was more complex than yours." "Maybe so, but I let my father go with no regrets. And to answer your question, yes, I like horses, but I also like people and they actually like me so I'll be inside."

I went inside and was soon reacquainted with- yet again- Klaus. He wanted to show me something, me being me, I was a little hesitant to see what he wanted to show me. "So," I said, walking beside him in the foyer. "What did you want to show me?" He led me to a large, painted canvas. "One of my passions." I stared at the masterpiece; colors and ridged lines formed over one another. "Impressive," I said. "I take it the curators at the Louvre aren't on vervain." He laughed. "Yeah, well that's their mistake." I stuck my arm over to him, showing him the bracelet he gave me for my birthday. "What about these? Where'd you steal this from?" "Well, that's a long story, but rest assured it was worn by a princess almost as beautiful as you." I sighed and rolled my eyes, looking away from him and spotting some sketches. I picked up a familiar-looking sketch. "Wait a second. Did-did you do these?" He came over to where I was. "Yeah, um actually one of my landscapes is hanging up in the Armitage. Not that anyone would notice. Have you been?" I stalled. "I've never really been anywhere." "I'll take you. Wherever you want; Rome, Paris, Tokyo." "Wow! Must be really nice to just snap your fingers and get whatever you want. Is that why you collect hybrids? To have an army serve you and take you places and bring you things." "You're making assumptions." His smile faded. "And why do you need Tyler? Stop controlling him, give him his life back." He frowned. "You know, this has been a fun evening, but I think it's time for you to leave." "I get it. Your father didn't love you so you assume that no one else will either and that's why you compel people or you sire them or you try to buy them off, but that's not how it works, you don't connect with people because you don't even try to understand them." I say, taking off the bracelet he gave me and laying it on a table and walking away.

Deep down I knew that he didn't feel loved and me saying what I said was only making him feel worse, but with everything that he's done to my friends, it's hard to see past the bad to the good in him. What was I even thinking, I like Tyler, not Klaus. Things change, people change, but I don't; I don't do change, I don't like change. Klaus is change.
