The Letter

So today I received a letter in the post. To most people it would just look like a normal letter, but not to me. There was something about the handwriting on the front and the wonky stamp which made me shiver. I knew it could only be from one person and that had to be you. The letter was in a brown envelope, sealed with sellotape, something only you ever did, you always had to be sure that your letter would never get read by anyone other than who it was meant to be read by. Again I shivered as I gently turned the envelope over and over in my hands. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to open it or not after all that you had put us all through.

Luckily for you Mum made that decision for me by calling me down to breakfast. I quickly shoved the envelope into my draw, making sure it was completely covered with the jumble of different items that I kept in that draw. I had everything in there, from school photos to pens that had run out. I knew no one would ever find it in there. I hurried downstairs to breakfast and then off to school, desperately trying to forget the morning’s events.

I couldn’t concentrate all day, and spent it daydreaming about what was inside that envelope. I knew I would have to open it when I got home but I really didn’t want to. After all those years we have had apart, I couldn’t believe you had got back in touch and I knew that the letter could contain anything. It was the unknown that scared me.

Finally, the bell rang at 3pm and I dashed home, just wanting to get it over and done with. The minute I got in the house I went up to my bedroom and locked the door. I got the envelope out and sat on my bed, just staring at it as if it had landed from space. I picked it up and put my thumb in the corner of the brown paper. I counted to three and ripped it open.
