She had sent an email to the President the previous evening, and to her surprise, received an almost immediate reply agreeing to a meeting. Now, she was on her way to the President’s office to formally submit her request, hoping President Shin would grant her approval.
Jisu paused in front of the office door, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. She bit her lip, lifted her hand, and knocked three times. A faint “Come in” drifted through the heavy wood, and she cautiously turned the knob, peeking inside before stepping over the threshold. The President sat at her desk, eyes glued to her laptop, fingers flying across the keyboard with a speed that matched her furrowed concentration.
After a few seconds, President Shin looked up, her focused expression melting into a warm smile. “Ah, Miss Choi,” she said, gesturing for Jisu to take a seat. “Give me just a moment.”
Jisu obeyed, settling herself into a chair with her hands folded neatly in her lap, back straight and poised. She watched as the President typed a few final sentences before closing her laptop with a decisive click.
“Miss Choi,” President Shin repeated, her tone familiar and confident. “I make it a point to remember the names of our most promising students. Your reputation for excellence has certainly made an impression here.” Her smile was knowing, almost proud.
Jisu felt a flutter of nerves mixed with a rush of gratitude. “Thank you, President Shin. That means a lot.”
“So,” the President began, leaning back in her chair, “you mentioned something in your email about enrolling in night classes for Painting majors?”
Jisu nodded, her hands tightening in her lap. “Yes, ma’am. I was hoping to see if it’s still possible to enroll in those classes. Balancing my current schedule has been... challenging.”
The President leaned forward, her fingers drumming lightly on the polished wood of her desk. For a tense moment, she seemed lost in thought, her eyes narrowing slightly as she considered the request. Jisu held her breath, bracing herself for a possible rejection.
Then, President Shin’s smile returned, wider this time. “I believe we can make that happen,” she said with a decisive nod. “I’ll speak with the faculty and see about adjusting the schedule to accommodate you. Expect an update from me very soon.”
A wave of relief washed over Jisu. She couldn’t suppress the grateful smile that spread across her face. “Thank you so much, President Shin. I truly appreciate this opportunity.”
“Not at all, Miss Choi. It’s always a pleasure to support dedicated students like yourself,” the President replied warmly.
With that, Jisu bowed respectfully and made her way out of the office, her heart light and her hopes high as she closed the door behind her.
