Chapter one
The flames that defined her childhood were blown out just as fast as the time had gone by. Jesse Reinfield showed a small smirk as she looked at the eighteen now lifeless candles that rested upon her strawberry cake.
"What are you going to do next Miss Adult?" Lindsey Brown asked with her eyebrow lifted slightly.
Lindsey Brown had been Jesse's best friend ever since she had moved to her neighborhood seven years ago. She was two months older then Jesse, and would not let her forget it. Other than this and the occasional ignorant statement, Lindsey was a pretty decent friend.
"Why I don't know Miss Brown. Porn, cigarettes, the possibilities are endless." Jesse said with a wink for she knew her mother was behind her.
"Lottery ticket it is." Lindsey quickly replied to give Jesse's mother a sigh of relief
Lindsey read Jesses smile as a sign of approval.
"Don't worry mom, you know I'm responsible. Just one ticket and I'll be satisfied." She threw on her worn out jacket and kissed her frozen mom on the cheek.
"You girls don't have time to go out. You have to be at the school in less than an hour."
"We will not be late to something that is that important to us mom. We'll meet you there."
Lindsey and Jesse grabbed their fancy clothes and raced to the old warn down car. It let out a small tired noise as it turned on. The nearest gas station was only a few miles away from their neighborhood. Jesse made sure to have her license in hand to prove her age as they walked through the gas stations door.
"I think I'm going to go with a scratch card." Jesse explained with a determined expression.
"So many choices to choose from. How about the one with flip-flops on it?"
"Very cute but I'm going to go with the basic one. It's only a dollar."
She bought the scratch ticket and proudly took her I.D back.
"Coin." Jesse told Lindsey as if she was a doctor about to complete major surgery.
"Coin, sir." Lindsey played along, giving a penny to the open hand.
Jesse closed her eyes and attacked three spots with the weapon of the side of the penny. All different shapes were revealed.
"Guess we will have to go with our backup plan. Earning money the old fashion way"
Lindsey looked at the time on her cell phone.
"For starters we need to get to graduation and get this high school career behind us. "
Both females glanced at the gas stations bathroom door. They both knew what they had to do but they wanted to deny it.
"Can't we just change into our dresses when we get there?"
"Are you on drugs Lindsey? If we show up wearing jeans and t-shirts underneath our caps and gowns they won't let us walk and twelve years of education will have gone to waste."
"We can take it."
They grabbed their white dresses and heels and held their breaths as they walked into the sickening mold infested bathroom. They worked quickly switching clothes and smiled at the old cashier when they busted out of the restroom fully clothed. They collected themselves and walked as if they were mature women until they reached the door when they bolted to the car to speed to the school. There were only a few minutes to spare when they reached the room where their class was meeting. Everyone chatted amongst themselves while the teachers tried organizing them into their lines.
