I go downstairs to find out what the banging was about. Once I'm downstairs, I see that the complex is completely different than what it was before. How did it change this much this fast? I see a chef-looking man giving demands to the people who are working around the complex. He has to be the one in charge I thought to myself. I walk up to him.
"Excuse me, sir." I say as I tap his shoulder. He turns around and looks me up and down with a confused look. I then realize that I am still wearing my pajamas. That's embarrassing.
"Yes, how may I help you?" He asked.
"What is exactly going on?" I asked. "And who are you?"
"Well, m'am, I am Papa Louie! I'm quite surprised you don't know who I am. I own a lot of shops around New York." He started explaining.
"I just moved here." I interrupted.
"Ah, I see" he continued, "Anyways, I have a lot of shops all around New York, and I am planning on making a new one: Papa's Scooperia! When I came up with the idea, I looked all over New York for the building that I thought would be perfect for Papa's Scooperia, and then I found this place. So, I talked to the owner, and he sold me the complex!"
"But just yesterday this place was still a complex," I said, "I just moved in yesterday."
"That's strange, yesterday was when I bought the complex. Everyone who lived in these apartments were meant to leave immediately. I'm surprised they didn't inform you about it," he said. Great. So I just moved in and I already have to move out.
"So where am I supposed to live now?" I asked him. "I barely have any money to buy 3 meals and I don't have a job."
"Work here!" He suggested. "And I'll let you stay at one of my houses that is not that far from here." Wow, he really said one of his houses. I can see why he makes so many shops now. I gave a shocked face. He must be really desperate for employees, considering he wants to hire someone he just met and has no idea about.
"You really want to hire me?" I asked. "You didn't even properly give me an interview."
"What's your name?" He asked me.
"Hailee." I answered
"Where are you from Hailee?" He asked.
"South Dakota" I answered.
"Have you ever been arrested?" He asked.
"No." I answered.
"You're hired!" He exclaimed. He handed me an ice cream scoop and walked away. Wow. I walked after him.
"Wait! That's it?" I asked. "You didn't even give me my hours, tell me how much I'm getting payed, when I'm starting..."
"I'll tell you everything tomorrow," he interrupted, "just be here tomorrow 8 in the morning. Here is the key to my house you will be staying at and this is my phone number and the address." He handed me a key and wrote down on a piece of paper his number and the address of the guest house for me to tell my taxi.
"Ok, thank you." I said. "I just have to go upstairs to get my things." I run upstairs, still confused on what just happened. I check the time. 1:30 a.m. I really need to get some sleep! Luckily, I didn't take out all my things, only my tooth brush and clothes. I put it all back in my suit case and go back downstairs to leave.
"Hailee!" I hear Papa Louie say as I was by the door. "See you at your first day of work tomorrow. Get a good night's sleep." I nod my head, smile, then leave. I wait outside until I spot a taxi and ask it to take me to the address that Papa Louie gave me. I then get struck by realization. What am I doing?! One minute I was in a trashy apartment, the next I am in a taxi on my way to a house that a random guy let me live in so I could work in his shop that I am not even sure is a real shop! What if I am getting scammed? I start to panic as the taxi pulls up into the driveway of a gorgeous house.
