"You're not... mom," Jongin sputtered unconsciously before he bit his lip and felt fear creep into his being as his father glared at him although drunk.
"I told you..." Jongin's father said as he took his arm off of the woman and walked over to the child. "I fucking told you that I would bring her home, and that's what you say to her?"
Jongin felt tears start to sting at his eyes as he started to feel himself trembling but his heart refused to back down from trying to accept that his father had called another woman his mother. "Dad, please, try to understand that mom is gone. That is not mom," Jongin said as he lifted a shaking finger at the woman who was watching them both from the dark.
"What did you say?"
"I said that woman is not-"
Jongin's world suddenly went black and he felt pain. There was a short, but sharp, woman's scream in the distance. Slowly, his vision cleared as the darkness faded and he found himself on the floor, his left cheek stinging. He looked up to his father who was breathing heavily with the woman draped around him as if stopping him from approaching Jongin; then Jongin realized she was doing exactly that. As the pieces fell into place, Jongin slowly got up, bringing himself to face his father as tears flowed down his face.
"Dad... why?" He said through broken sobs.
"Never again," his father spat out, his voice dangerously low and dripping with anger. "Don't let me hear you say that ever again."
"Please," the woman said, her grip tightening around the man's waist and pulling him back. "Please, he's just a child, he didn't mean it. Stop it. Let's go to your room. You need to rest."
Jongin's father glowered at him for a few more seconds before he started trudging to his room with the woman walking by his side.
Jongin slumped into the couch, his mind blank and his hurt full of hurt. He was still trying to grasp the fact that his father had hit him because although his mind tried to deny it, the pain told him otherwise. His father had never been one of violence. The worst Jongin could remember was when his father had scolded him and it had happened only once.
He brought his hand up to his hurting cheek and held it in disbelief. He lost track of time and he was brought back to reality when he heard a door close and his head snapped to look at the woman coming out of his father's room. She walked over and sat down next to Jongin on the couch.
"Jongin, is it?" The woman asked, her head tilting to a side as she looked at the silent child from head to toe. "It's better not to anger your father from now on."
Jongin remained silent as he stared at the woman.
"You understand what I'm trying to say, right? I'm saying that you should not say the same things you said today ever again; not unless you want to be beaten like a dog," she said, and the mischievous glint was back in her eyes as the corners of her lips turned up.
"Who are you and what do you want?" Jongin finally asked, unable to keep the hatred in his voice from slipping out.
The woman clicked her tongue as she shook her head in a disapproving manner. "You're a child, therefore start behaving like one. Show adults respect when you're talking to one."
"Don't tell me what to do, you're not my mother."
The woman giggled in a manner that sent chills down the child's spine. "You don't listen, do you? You should be careful with your words from now on because I don't think your father would like the way you talk about me."
