Guys just a warning this is the longest chapter of the book. It's nearly double the length of some chapters so buckle up and don't yell at me after :,))
Also warning there are some graphic details and gore.
Kai barrelled into me with a power greater than I'd ever felt in any of our mock fights. As I fell backwards, I scrambled to find my balance. My heart was fluttering frantically like there was a bird trapped inside my chest. His big paws thumped heavily against my back.
"Pa!" I shrieked at the top of my lungs. My voice nearly broke. "Help me!!"
"Shut your bloody mouth, you puny little thex. He's not coming for you." Kai snapped, then took a long, ragged breath as if to calm his anger. "Nobody is."
I was thinking frantically. I couldn't let him hold me down again like he did back in Little River, so before he had the chance to flip me over and expose my belly, I dug my back claws into his solid hutches and shoved myself away. His long claws scraped the skin off my back as I lurched forward, and I hissed in pain. It stung like mad, but I couldn't whine now—I had to focus just as the voice had said. Focusing was the only thing that would keep me alive.
Kai growled in frustration and leapt at me again, flying through the air faster than a bullet.
'Move!' The voice snarled harshly in my ear, and I rolled onto my side. I scrambled to my paws, panting, and triumph flared up in my chest as Kai landed with a heavy thud.
'There's your chance! Leap!'
So I did. I coiled my back legs like a spring, and before he had the chance to recover or turn around, I launched myself at him. Everything seemed to fall into slow motion as Kai's poisoned eyes landed on mine, widened and hollow.
I can't hurt him... I can't...
'You MUST. Or you will DIE.'
I hated it.
But the voice was right.
I'm so sorry, Kai. I beg that one day... maybe, you'll find it in your heart to forgive me.
In that sullied moment, I knew I wasn't only talking about the physical damage I was about to inflict on my kin, my brother, but all those moons of emotional damage I had refused to open my eyes to. I was so wrapped up in my own relationship with my father that I'd become oblivious to the hurt it had caused Kai. I'd selfishly looked out for myself, and stolen something that could never be returned.
I promise, Kai: I'll never be blind like that again.
There was a thick, grotesque heartbeat in my ears as I landed roughly, square on his back. My head flew downward with the force of the impact and I bit down hard into his neck, latching on with claws embedded into his shoulders; he screeched, out of rage or pain I couldn't tell, and jerked himself violently backwards—my jaw clenched down harder instinctively, aching with the effort. A metallic tang bathed every inch of my mouth, and vivid images of the haunting nightmare flashed through my mind.
No, I can't—I—
My lips quivered, and my grip loosened.
—even if this isn't truly my brother, I just can't hurt him!
The voice said nothing.
With a hauntingly loud yowl, Kai landed hard on his back, using his weight to crush me beneath him. I felt something in my pinned shoulder pop, and I let out a screech of pain as a jarring bolt of agony shot through my shoulder. My paw tingled and went numb.
