It was a clear summer night, the last summer night before her first day of senior year was to begin to be exact. To say she was excited to begin the new school year would be an over exaggeration to say the least. Saint Clare High was the farthest thing from a happy place for Avery. Her first three years at the school had been met with many trials and tribulations that lead her straight to a month’s stay at the mental health institution in the next town over for 3 months.

Avery pushed the memories of those three months to the back of her mind. She didn’t want to think about that. This year would be different, or so she hoped. She strolled over to her connected bathroom and began her nightly skincare routine, pulling her long red locks into a messy ponytail before she began. She finished rinsing her face and set her alarm for the next morning. 6:45 AM she groaned internally. Here’s to new beginnings.

The shrill tone of Avery’s alarm screamed, startling her out of bed with a thump. She groaned rubbing the sleep from her eyes with one hand as she reached to silence the shrill tone with her other hand.

“You okay sweetie?” called her mother.

   “Peachy!” She returned dully.

With a groan she lifted herself to her feet and glided over to her wardrobe. Her outfit consisted of  her favorite ripped black skinny jeans, fishnet stockings, and a knit maroon sweater that fell delicately off of her left shoulder. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she stepped over to her floor length mirror and begin applying her usual makeup. Let’s get this over with. Glancing over at the clock, she realized she was going to be late if she didn’t get a move on now.

Hastily shuffling down the stairs, she slid her chunky black platforms on. She raced to the kitchen, nearly tripping over her own feet, and grabbed an apple from the bowl on the counter.

“Easy there, speedy.” Her mother chimed with a small giggle.

“No time ma, can’t be late for my first day in h-” she glanced up wide eyed, “I mean… school.” Avery continued leaning over to plant a small kiss on her mother’s cheek.

With that, she disappeared out of the front door. Her white Mustang came to a halt in the school parking lot in record time. She quickly sprinted into the school building, gripping her class schedule nervously. Making it to her first period class just in time, she took a seat in the very back. She casually smoothed some misplaced strands of hair back into place as she waited on class to begin. Mrs. Allen strode into class closing the door gently on her way in, her thick glasses perched on the tip of her pointed nose.

“Good morning class,” she began calmly, “I hope you all had a lovely Summer and-” she paused abruptly by the classroom door being pushed open. In walked a tall, lanky boy with minty green hair. “Nice of you to join us Mr. Kirk, please have a seat and try to be on time next time” she stated flatly.

Avery eyed the interesting boy carefully as he strode lazily to the only open seat in the classroom. Right next to her. She tried to concentrate on the lecture Mrs. Allen was giving for the rest of the class but could feel the boy’s bright blue eyes burning a hole into the side of her head. Trying her best to ignore the boy next to her, she leaned forward, nonchalantly resting her head on her hand so as to block the boy from her peripheral. Just as luck would have it, the bell signalling the end of the period rang out ending the first period class. Avery stood abruptly, tossing her books haphazardly into her bag trying to avoid the towering boy beside her.

Just as she was about to make a break for the door, the boy gently tapped her shoulder.

“Avery right?” the boy questioned. How did he know her name?

“Uh yeah, and you are?” she inquired cautiously.

“Garrett” he stated, seemingly not interested in introductions so much as he was interested in the slender redhead in front of him. “How come I’ve never seen you around?” he continued, following closely behind Avery as she glided down the hall to her next class.

“Why don’t you ask around, the town loves to indulge in gossip” she snapped, wanting out of this conversation as soon as she could. She left him standing there with a dumbfounded look on his face as she entered her next class. Why is he so interested in my story, more importantly, who is Garrett Kirk?
