Chapter Two

Purple blood spattered across my face and over the leather armor I wore. Draax's face was pale and silent as he slumped into me. The sounds of enemy horseman fell on deaf ears as I watched his spirit leave his body. My cries strained my throat and burned in my chest as every cell in my body mourned for him.

But then, fire ignited in my bones and I looked at the arrow in his back. I pulled it from his body and began to pull my own bow from its quiver.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." A sarcastic, gravelly voice said from my left.

"Not if you want to leave here with your body intact." A leering voice said to my right.

"Boys please. Let her try. The Queen will be pleased to know that she still has some fight in her." Came a disembodied snarl from behind me.

"Fight? Please. Don't insult me. She's weak. Just look her, sitting there on her knees with tears in her eyes. She's nothing." An annoyed female voice sounded from dead ahead.

My target. I thought to myself. And within the span of a Nytebird's heartbeat, she was pinned to the trunk of the great tree behind her with the arrow that destroyed my sanity. Flame red hair in her face, purple eyes null of life. Vampyre's. Must be here to take me away. They must've learned of our plan. I told him we should've have left when we had the chance. Now, he's dead.

"How dare you!" The voice from my left roared. He dropped off his horse, violet irises ablaze with the rage that flowed through him. He drew his knife from its sheathe and closed the distance between us in a few strides. He put it to my right cheek and put his nose to mine. He was so close I could almost taste the blood on his breath. "You will pay for-" his words failed as the life gurgled from his lips. Silver blood pooled over my hands as my blade pierced his belly.

"And you, are now a message, to her." I sneered as I ripped my blade out. My ember eyes glowed with fury as I rounded on the man to my right. A tall, muscled vampyre stared at his dead brother. His eyes showed the pain I felt, but I didn't have the capacity to care. His lips drew back to reveal pointed fangs as I slowly stepped towards him. Once I was only a few feet away, he charged at me, sword drawn, ready to plunge it into my heart. With a mighty cry, he thrusted his sword straight into my chest. I felt the sliver blade exit my back and I dropped my head.

"Stupid beast. All you lot are the same. At least now you can rot in hell with your lover." His breathe coated my nostrils with blood.

My laugh sounded across the clearing. I lifted my head and looked at him. My eyes now glowing with the promise of his demise.

"I think not." I jerked away and with one motion I broke his arm in half. I wrapped my hand around his throat and slowly applied pressure. Pushing him back, I pinned him against the tree behind him and lifted him off the ground. "If I'm to die, then you shall be waiting for me." My hand twitched and his neck snapped. I dropped him at my feet and pulled his blade out of my chest. I turned to the last of them and smiled as the blood drained from his face.

"Now you are going to tell me where I can find the Queen. Or you will die with my blood in your body. Do you know what that will do?" He stared at me in terrified silence. "If you die with my blood in your body, you will become the beast your kind so viscously hates. And then, after they've chased you from the safety of your kingdom, I will track you down, and break every bone in your body. Over. And over. And over again. Every day I will start with a new part of your body. Each more calculated and painful than the last. Until finally, you can no longer heal yourself. And then, I will strip your body of your nerves and watch as your blood pools around you. Do you understand?"

"Yes. He understands." A sly, feline voice said in my ear. Pain exploded through my chest as I felt her hand grip my heart. "You're mine now, Bellyn. The last remaining Wolfe to walk the earth, with more power than the entire witch coven, is mine." She released my heart and I fell to the damp earth. I looked up and, as everything went black, her fanged smile danced it's way into my unconscious.
