Third Person (but kinda Harrys POV)
August 31st 1998
Life was different now. Things had changed. The war was over. Things should have gotten better. But they didn't. Harry lay awake on his bed finding it hard to sleep. This was how most nights went. Some nights he couldn't sleep for no reason l, but usually, he kept himself awake. For when his eyes fluttered closed he was taken back to everything. Back to war. Back to watching his friends and family die. Back to being on the run. And most nights, back to Voldemort messing with his head, invading his mind. And he hated it. He hated having no control over what his mind played. So his decision was to just stop sleeping. He knew it was unhealthy and the ever-growing bags under his eyes showed that to, but it was too late to stop now. He was already accustomed to spending the night awake.
It was Augst 31st. The night before he said goodbye to the dusty walls of 12 Grimmauld place and packed up his things for his last year at Hogwarts. When McGonagall first sent out the offer to return Harry wanted to burn it. He didn't want to step foot in there ever again. It was his home for so long, the only place he felt loved and the only place he could eat a full meal. His memories of the place were fond, mainly just him and his friends getting up to all sorts of trouble.
But the memories of last year still plagued him. He didn't think he would be able to walk down the corridors where only months prior his friends and classmates had lost their lives and others their loved ones. It was all his fault Harry told himself. Innocent people died for him, and he couldn't live with that. He couldn't live with the fact that although they did nothing wrong they died, and he couldn't stop it. Why did they die but he didn't. It wasn't fair. Why couldn't he have just died like everyone else instead of rubbing it in their families face's that he still lived when others did not. Harry let these thoughts eat him up inside until that was all he thought about.
It wasn't until Hermione informed him that she had pressured Ron to go back with her that he started to think he might join. It was only a year. And with no murderous wizard chasing after him it should be a pretty relaxed one. It took all his courage to write a response letter to McGonagall to inform her of his decision to return. Not only did Harry miss his friends dearly, but he had also been living alone for the summer and was getting quite lonely.
He hadn't seen Ginny all summer either. He knew anything he felt for her before was long gone now but he didn't know why it just was. Ginny was pretty, smart and sporty and Harry liked her sure, but he couldn't see them going anywhere and he felt as if she knew aswell. With many months to think about it, Harry knew that when term resumed he would have to break things off, no matter how hard it hurt him.
The sun was beginning to rise through the dark curtains he had draped over the dirty windows and Harry decided he would get up now and start getting ready. He pulled back the bedspread that he only just fit his feet in which was saying something as he wasn't particularly tall. He hit the cold floor and started to walk down the many stairs to reach the kitchen. He was used to making breakfast as each morning he would have to for the Dursleys. He made himself two pieces of toast and simply put butter on each one and ate. Casting a quick Tempus he noted that the time was 7: 04 and left the kitchen to continue packing.
After a couple hours of last-minute packing he left the house at 10 to make it to the station a bit before 11 when the train was due to part the station. He stepped outside into the chilly air and began to walk down the cobbled pathway with his trunk in hand. "I'm ready," he thought but after thinking it over, he didn't really think he was.
