Olivia's Point of view// Italics are flashbacks// Song mentioned: Don't you (forget about me) by Simple Minds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We were all sitting next to each other as the principal called out our classes' name so the students could go and accept their diploma, graduate high school, and go forth into the world, the forget this place.
And strangely, that not what I'm thinking about. What I can't believe is that they sat us all next to each other, all six of us. This must be the first time that were all in such proximity of each other, and don't talk, barely look at each other. It's painful, and I'm pretty sure everyone else feels it too. And it feel so very bad because we used to all express our deepest feelings to one another, and now all that is gone. Maybe if it weren't for the events of this past summer, we'd still be talking, still be friends.
"Ava Thompson- London Film Academy" said principal.
"I've always wanted to study film" Ava said, after taking a bite of her pop tart, turning on her camera and filming. "And why so?" Lukas said, tossing a grape into the air, trying to catch it into his mouth, but horribly failing. Ava lets out a laugh. "It because something so simple can make people so happy. I'd like to make people happy. I can't wait for that day."
"Carlos Sanchez- Harvard University"
"And if I put this log here, this other one here, light the fire at exactly this point, we should have-you guys!" Carlos tried to be mad but cracked a smile as he turned around to see us, fake snoring, leaning against one another. We all burst into fits of laughter as he keeps a playful glare pointed at us. "You guys are the worst!" he said, through laughter.
"Josie Müller- MIT"
We were all in our sleeping bag when Lukas suddenly groaned. "What's wrong?" Ava said, turning over to face him. "Flashlight won't turn on! That's what!" all of us groaned. It was the only flashlight that worked. "Guys! Guys! Calm down." We all groaned again as Josie lets out a laugh. "Don't worry. We have the stars." She rolled on her back on her sleeping bag and pointed to the sky. "And that's the big dipper-"
"Lukas Stein- University of New Orleans"
"Pues entonces le dije a ella que no podia hacer eso, porque era mio, y mio solamente-" The group laughed as Lukas spoke Spanish in his sleep. We were used to it, him going as far as speaking French to Russian in his sleep when we all had sleepovers. "Carlos! Hand me that sharpie" I said making a hand gesture for him to hand it to me. Carlos gave a wicked grin as he handed the sharpie to me. I could hear the group cracking up behind me, snickering as I drew a mustache and glasses on his face. "Стоп! Стоп! это щекочет!" he said, scrunching his nose and face up as he begged us to stop in his sleep. We just kept laughing.
"Mark Davis- Carnegie Mellon University"
"Where art thou Romeo?" Mark goofed off, as he wrapped one of the blankets around his head. He fell off the log as Lukas threw a rock as his feet. He let out a small scream as he fell to the floor. "Oucheth! That has hurtheth!" he said, trying not to laugh. The rest of us were just cracking up into tears of laughter.
"Olivia Taylor- Fashion Institute of Technology"
Me.
"Lukas, you know that shirt is NOT your color!" I said faking being angry. Lukas, with a mouthful of cookies said- "wat waf dat?" he stuffed more cookies into his mouth. "Yu hat dis shirte?" he said, faking offense. "Of course! Just look at the horrendous green neon color on you!" I said, cracking up.
"And that Ladies and gentlemen, and of course- graduates- is the class of 2020 of Jefferson high school!" The principal said, and the students threw their caps into the air, as if on cue. "Congratulations!"
We all looked at each other as we caught our caps and gave each other a silent nod. We all walked away from each other. It was sad, watching the people you once knew better than they know themselves become strangers. I took off my gown as I joined my dad in the car. "Hello, love. You'd say goodbye?" I glanced out the window as I saw Lukas, with his mom and sister, having pictures taken. I felt a stray tear roll down my cheek, but I wiped it away before it could become visible to dad.
"yeah, dad." I said, putting on a smile. "everything is fine." He started the radio. Don't you (forget about me) by Simple Minds started playing. He gave a smile and said "Chinese food? We can go get those spring rolls you really like", he finished, giving me a smile. "yeah. Sound nice." I said, putting on a smile.
I took one last glance back at the high school, a place I would probably never see again, with people I may never see again.
Won't you come see about me
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out
Love's strange, surreal in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don't you forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you forget about me.
Don't forget about me you guys. I thought. No matter how far apart or divided we may be.
