Mi Madrina Querida
Heaven took you too soon from us
I don't know if you saw the light of the jeep
but now I know you saw the sky's lights—
stars and moon and Heaven's pearly gates
You were there since I was in kindergarten
Now I'm eighteen, almost nineteen
and you were still with me when I graduated high school
I still feel like you are with me
like I'll see you next week or you'll call me Saturday morning,
just like every other year,
and wish me a happy birthday with such love
You came when I was in the hospital with toys and compassion
because I needed surgery when I was six and scared and sick
I think I'd rather have visited you in the hospital
then at the morgue with my heart silent—
trying to hear you breathe
I couldn't cry when I saw you resting
because my mind isn't ready to say you are resting in paradise
in a beautiful Eden that will shield you from the world's cruelty
I write this in English,
but maybe in Heaven you can read this in Spanish
but I just want to say goodbye properly to you
I love you and I miss you and I know the world will never
ever stop crying because of the angel it lost—
the angel we lost.Rest in peace, December 9, 2019.
