Well this sucked. Alfred just wanted an energy drink but of course his wallet had to have no useful bills. He loved getting them after sports practice every day and he had forgotten to grab some from home. And the vending machines only accepted 1 dollar bills.
He tsks under his breath and continues ruffling through his wallet, but to no avail. There just seemed to be no other bill in there other than the useless 20 dollar one he had wadded up in his back jean shirt. "Awww nuts..." He looks up and notices the cafeteria was literally a few steps away. He laughs a little to himself. Of course the school have vending machines right next the cafeteria! There, you could trade in your cash there to have the right bills. At least they got one thing right.
Feeling bubbly and happy again, Alfred dashes into line after winking at a girl who was sweeping the floor. She blushes darkly and stammers all over herself whispering some Japanese word that he didn't have the slightest clue the meaning of. It was close to closing time, the cafeteria usually closed at around 4:00, his little USA watch read "3:50." He waits for the tall guy in front of him to finish buying his ice cream, watching him walk away chanting "Kol kol kol" or something like that. He grins goofily at the cashier before brushing his hair back in the usual way.
"Hey there dude! I'm here to exchange my money.I just need a few 1 dollar bills. You got enough change for a 20 dollar bill yeah?" He finally gets a good look at the cashier. It was a guy around his age, he vaguely remembered seeing him around. He was always holding some thick book of poetry or something and kept to himself. He honestly couldn't remember the last time he spoke to him. His life had been so busy lately and he really got swept up in sports. These thoughts sort of coalesced inside him, and didn't notice he was lost in his own mind until the other clears his throat. "Huh- oh wait did you say something?" Alfred looks up at him not sure why he stuttered over that first word like that.
"I said you'll have to go to the financial office for that, the cafeteria doesn't exchange money." Alfred couldn't help notice his smooth accent and the way he seemed so hypnotically nice to him. But the words he said wasn't as nice, and he didn't look too thrilled to see the American here.
"Awww come on dude! I walked all the way over here! The financial office is like.... uhhhhhh..." He trails off trying to remember exactly where it was. The boy sighs and points somewhere to the east.
"It's just down that way, turn the corner and keep going until you see that black door." Alfred's eyes widen as he finally remembers.
"Oh yeah oh yeah!!! There's that mean Swiss dude who keeps glaring at you whenever you tell him you forgot to bring your student ID and always yells at kids to stay away from the office if we're not using it. Ooooh oooh, and have you heard about that one time he used a-"
"I don't see where this conversation is leading to....I told you where it is, you might want to go to it before it closes." He motions to the clock and by doing so, accidentally brushes his hand against Alfred's sleeve. For some reason, the touch had this electric feeling to it. Alfred nearly forgot how to speak when he looks up from Arthur lowering his hand and into his eyes. They were such a brilliant green. He stammers.
"Oh, so if I run I could make it there?" An idea slips into his mind. Arthur shrugs.
"You seem to be athletic enough to do that...." Alfred notices how he tried to avoid eye contact and kept shifting back and forth on his feet. "Not that I'm saying you're all jock like and popular of course. I only meant that you have the-" Alfred smirks a little forgetting his little quest for the dollar bill, what could be better than teasing a cute nerd like him?
"Ahhh I get it." The cocky jock winks with his signature head tilt. "You're into this!" He flexed his muscles a little and laughs heartily. Alfred notices how hard Arthur tries to give him a blank look, but there was be evidence of it working. The way he tried to stop the corners of his lips from curving up, the way he subtly leaned from the stand and closer to him... Alfred had blurted it out before he could even realize. "Could you at least tell me your name before I run off to face Mr. Get Off My Land?" To his surprise, he responds.
"It's Arthur. Arthur Kirkland." He says his name like it wasn't a fact but more like an opinion, for whatever reason. "Maybe try buying a drink here instead. You wasted time flirting and it's already 3:59. We both know Mr. Zwingli loves going home as early as possible." Another chance for our crafty American.
"Nawww Arthur boo, all I want to buy is your heart~" he could have sworn he heard Arthur choke on himself.
"Excuse me? What did you just call me?" Again with the avoiding eye contact. Alfred chuckles.
"Well if I can't have my energy drink, can I have your number?" Arthur stares at him, finally allowing their eyes to meet.
"You are hopeless."
"You are cute."
"Shut up and leave if you're not going to buy anything."
"Oooooh so cold!" Alfred laughs again with that cheery heroic laugh that made Arthur's stomach flutter like made. He looks up at the menu, and realizes that if he buys a cookie for a dollar, Arthur would have to give him change.
"Ooooooonnnnnnneeeeeee yummy chocolate cookie please!" Alfred winks and hands him the 20 dollar bill. Even to this day, the memory of Arthur's light dust of pink blush across his cheeks could make him squeal.
Arthur takes the money, careful to avoid touching his fingers, and turns around to grab the cookie. Alfred waits patiently, watching him intently. As his back was turned to him, Alfred could notice how nice his body was from full view as he steps over to the left. He had such nice legs, hips......he caught himself staring as Arthur takes a cookie from the back and gives it to him.
He comes back to this world once he sees the cookie and notices Arthur counting out the change, with a pencil for some reason. Alfred smiles, not thinking much of it. "Yeahhhhh dude! Be sure to throw in like some 1 dollar bills!" He could have sworn he saw Arthur chuckle to himself before giving him a wad of bills.
"I'm afraid you're the last customer of the day, it's 4:00 now."
"Yeah dude, thanks!" Arthur turns away and it vaguely looked like he was trying his hardest not to laugh. Alfred turns around and unrolls the money. He get a little confused when there's no sign of a one dollar bill. "Huh....15...5....and 2 and 2!? Whatttttt?!" He whirls around, knowing Arthur was still there behind the closed glass. "DUDE!!! Not cool!" He heard the voice come back to him from the glass, and even though he was a little distraught that he didn't get the change he wanted, he couldn't help but admire that sweet voice.
"Sorry! The cafeteria closes at 4:00. Enjoy your cookie and the rest of the day!" That accent really came out this time, it seemed like Arthur was right proud of himself. Alfred grumbles.
"It better be a good cookie man!" He turns away with a huff that he didn't really mean. While walking, he decided to treat himself for all of that earlier. He looked down at the cookie and starts to unwrap the foil around it. A piece of paper flutters out and onto the ground.
Curious, Alfred bends over and picks it up. A 10 digit number was hastily scribbled as if it was written by someone writing as quickly as possible. There was also another sentence written that still managed to have such nice penmanship despite the obvious speed it was written at.
If I'm really into anything, it's probably not jocks who don't know when the cafeteria closes....don't call me at weird times.
-Arthur
Alfred smiles, a blush forming on his face. These words were so simple, yet made him so happy. He gently bites into the cookie and the thought of the boy couldn't leave his mind. That day, the boring school cookies that never really sold well tasted like the best thing Alfred had ever eaten in a while.
