You leaned back into your chair, stretching your arms above your head with a satisfied huff.
"That was really nice, Engie." You said, bringing your hands down onto the table, clattering your empty plate.
The Engineer chuckled, waving away the praise with his gloved hand, and offered you a warm smile.
"Why, thanks [Y/N]."
"Did you do something different?"
"Not that I kno-""Yeah it was really good, uhh-" your attention was abruptly stolen by a rise from the man sitting next to you. Scout's voice broke the rooms atmosphere, and his Boston drawl forced an extension on his words, as if he was trying to distract someone with them. "Y'know, I really liked the toast. What-what'd ya'do? Use some a'Spy's fancy imported butter?"
"Spy has imported butter?" Pyro piped up, although to everyone else it just sounded like mumbling (but mumbling that was a question, no doubt.)
"That is only for special occasions." Spy grumbled, his narrowed eyes peeking out from above his newspaper. You placed your hand on the table in his direction.
"Every day is special when I'm here." You teased. Each of the men around you broke out into some form of laughter- be it Spy's reserved chuckle, or Demo's croaky holler.
"Ya got that right." He blurted, raising a bottle in your direction.
You couldn't help but laugh, too. All these loud, boisterous men, double your size and quadruple your strength... they'd surely be intimidating to some, but to you, they were family.
But something was off. One of them wasn't acting like himself- not at all. You turned to Scout, and saw him hunched over in his chair, shoulders tense, bouncing his leg and rigidly fiddling with the handle of his fork.
"Scout-"
"Uh, [Y/N]. You have check up with doctor today, yes?"
Before you could ask Scout anything, Heavy's reminder sent a spark of adrenaline through your body. Of course- You'd even asked for it to be today. Go figure it'd still slip your mind.
"Aw damn, I forgot about that." You exclaimed, shooting up from your seat, about to dash out of the room- But you paused and slammed your hands down on the table as another thought popped into your mind. "Should I brush my teeth because I just ate?"
"He's a doctor, not a dentist." Engie reassured.
"I don't think I'd trust him in zat field..." Spy uttered, pulling his newspaper away from his face with a wince."Cool, uh- okay- See you guys later-!" You smiled and hurried out of the room, for real this time.
"Hey, [Y/N], wait-"
You skidded to a halt, as Scout scrambled from his seat, quick to join you in the hallway.
"What's up?"
Scout looked back for a second, making sure the door to the mess hall was definitely shut. He wrung his hands together, avoiding eye contact.
"Can I, like- can I come with ya?"
You blinked.
"Uh... yeah, if you want."
"Really?" And Scout finally looked up, his eyes meeting yours.
"Yeah.." you cocked your head, and moved closer to him. "Scout, are you okay?"Scout felt his face grow hot, and he swallowed, diverting his eyes again.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be? I'm perfectly fine." He threw his arms up, in an exaggerated display of being 'perfectly fine.'
