Chapter 5.
As soon as the final bell rang, I made my way over to my locker, only to be stopped by Ryan.
“Kenzie, I need to talk to you. Right now.” He says with the most serious look on his face.
“Um, okay? About what? What’s going on?” I ask him. I look past him to see Justin and Chaz at my locker.
“So Justin didn’t tell you his feelings?”
“No, the bell rang and he didn’t have enough time. But I already know he was going to tell me that he likes me.” I admit. It’s pretty obvious.
“Oh! Okay, well how do you feel about that?” Ryan asks, making me stop and think.
How do I feel about that? I feel weird. I feel like everything can either go up or down. I can either burst into a fantastic state of ecstasy, or a horrible depression. I feel like this will permanently be the end of our friendship, whether we date or not. I feel like I have to say yes or no, there is no in-between, and things might end up bad either way. I don’t want to lose Justin as a friend. I will never be able to handle that. I feel like our friendship is already over, and we haven’t even talked yet. That’s how I feel.
But instead of saying all this, I just shrug my shoulders and look away.
“Come on Kenzie, it’s okay. I know that everything will work out between you guys. I mean, you do like him right?” I sheepishly nod my head. “Then just go out with him! We both know he’s going to ask you out, just say yes!”
“You know what? You’re absolutely right! I guess we’ve all seen this coming for a while haven’t we? Alright, I’ll go talk to him!”
“Oh, and give him this!” Ryan reaches into his book bag and pulls out an orange.
“What…?”
“Well Justin loves juice, so maybe you guy can make juice from it… and be happy.”
“Well, I guess I trust you… so okay haha.”I smile and hug Ryan tightly. As I walk over to Justin at my locker, I think over everything that Ryan has just said.
If Justin asks me out, why should I say no?! If things don’t work out, I’m sure we’ll just end up being best friends! As if nothing even happened!
I finally get to my locker and Chaz sees me first. “Kenzie!”
Justin immediately turns around to face me. “H-hey Kenzie, w-what’s up?”
“Nothing, just trying to put my books away…”
“Oh!” he says as he realizes that he’s in the way of my locker. He moves out of the way and instantly blushes. “So uh…”
“Hey Chaz! I need to show you something… over there!” Ryan suddenly appears and whisks Chaz away. He quickly winks at Justin before he disappears.
Justin blushes and looks down, so I take this opportunity to start the conversation. “So what were you saying at lunch? You didn’t get to finish your sentence…”
“Huh? Oh, that, well uh… I was just saying that…” He begins, but becomes too embarrassed to finish.
“Hey, Justin?” I say. He looks up. Now is the perfect time, just do it, Kenzie! “The answer is yes.” I say and engulf him in a giant hug, wrapping my arms around his neck. Ugh, I hope I’m not embarrassing myself right now! His body becomes stiff for a second as if in shock, but then he relaxes into me, wrapping his arms around my waist.
“I am so happy right now.” He whispers into my ear, giving me the shivers. We briefly separate and I look him straight in the eyes.
“Things are gonna be really different now.”
“How? It’ll be the same; we’re still best friends, except we’ll kiss and stuff.” Justin says with the cheekiest grin on his face.
“Oh really?” I say, leaning closer to him. Our lips are inches apart when we suddenly get interrupted.
“WAIT HOLD UP! ARE YOU TWO DATING? OMG.” Chaz says all at once.
“Sorry, I tried my best to control him.” Ryan says as he appears beside Chaz.
Justin and I giggle. “It’s okay!”
“So… ARE YOU TWO DATING?!” Chaz asks again. Justin and I look at each other, smile, and nod. “OH MY GOSH WHAT. YOU GUYS ARE OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL!?”
“Dude, you’re such a girl!” Ryan says and shoves Chaz into a locker. The two begin to ‘fight’ and Justin and I just watch them, laughing. As we’re watching Chaz and Ryan continue to fake fight, I suddenly feel Justin’s arms snake around my waist. I turn to face him and give him a light peck on the cheek.
“Oh! By the way, here’s an orange! We can juice it later!” I say and him the small fruit. He gives me a confused look, but accepts the juice-filled sphere. Maybe I should take Ryan’s advice more often…
