                                                                                Chapter 1

6.00 a.m.....

" Lance you better wake your butt up before your late to your new school." , Lance Aunt Linda yelled from the kitchen. Little did she know Lance was already awake, in fact he's been awake since midnight tossing in turning in his sleep. Not only was he worried about his new school, he was worried about where his new school was located, which was all the way across town from his old school. He was nervous about the location because it was on the northside of his city Greenbush, Mississippi, the rich side of town that mainly consisted not only the rich but anyone who was not apart of the black race, and they have been known to make blacks feel unwelcome on that side of town. Lance had won a government scholarship to the Greenbush Secondary Magnet Academy for his oustanding academics and perfect attendance since the kindergarten. He of course wanted to stay at his current high school but his aunt made him take the scholarship, she thought this would be his chance to receive the best education and get as far away from this town as possible. His aunt had been taking care of him since was 6 years old his mother died right after she birth him due to unforseen complications, and his father was innocently murdered by the police walking home. They said it was cause he looked suspicious and tried to attack a officer while resisting arrest, but the witnesses said he was minding his own business, when it was getting closer to the time of the court hearing for this case all the witnesses had all "coincidently" went missing and was never seen again. The judge dismissed the case for lack of evidence and Lance's father murder was never vindicated. Lance knew his aunt and family know more to the story than they let on, but they never seem to want to discuss it with him so he let it go thinking that it still brings them pain to discuss it, little did he know it was anger they felt

" Lance do you here me? Boy don't make me have to come in there, get your cousin up to while im in here stirring these grits" Lance finally snaps out of his trance and follows his aunts orders. He woke his ten year-old  twin cousins " Brandon and Beigha wake up and get ready for school." Lance  went to go take a shower and put on his new mandatory purple and white plaid blazer and his new black slacks. He walks into the kitchen where his Aunt Linda is still in her night gown and shower cap sitting at the table drinking her daily dose of black coffee and reading the newspaper in digust " Mmm that's a damn shame, poor thing was only 13 years old"  she did this every morning indulge in  the morning newspaper to see who's been killed or sent to jail. " Aunt Linda why do you read that stuff?" she looked at him like he tried to smack her " Because I'm grown dammit, and because I'm reminding myself why im making go to that bougie ass white school on the northside with them crooked ass people." Lance shook his head and reached for what was left of the grits and fried hotdogs. His aunt had to make do with what she had she lost her job down at the factory and government cut back on the amount of foodstamps she recieved. " Baby if I haven't told you im proud of you", she said looking at him smiling " You kept them grades up and all your hard work is paying off, I know your probably upset with me for making you go to that new white school, but you have to understand that if that means you getting up out of this no good racist ass town your going, I knew something had to change after Trey and Tyler died so the first opportunity that came to get you up away from here you going"

Trey and Tyler was Lance best friends since they was 6, both of their parents was amoung the few witnesses that went missing close to Lance's father court case. You can say their mourning brought them closer together. Until last year Tyler and Trey went to the movies with some girls they met on the northside, soon as they exited the movie theater and begin to cross the street with the girls they were all ran over by 2 pick up trucks that came out of know where, witnesses said the people that was driving had been waiting on them to come out of the movie theater and soon as they got the chance they smashed right into them and keep on going. The Greenbush Police Department didn't even pursue an investagation.

" Beigha come take a picture of me and Lance before he start his first day of his preppy white school" she chuckled , but he was trying to get out of taking the picture squirming. " Boy be still and take this picture with me your momma and my baby brother would be so proud of you"  Beigha stomps in mad " Why do he get to go to the white people schools I wanna go I'm smart" Aunt Linda wanted to snatch her face off if it was one thing she couldn't stand other than this town or the white people in it, is ungrateful kids " Girl hush up, the only thing smart about  you and your brother are yall damn mouth, and if you show out at school today imma whoop your asses in front of all your little friends think i'm playing now take the picture." Lance chuckled at his aunt and her crazy ways, but he knew she meant well, but he also knew she was not to be crossed. " Alright yall, im already gone stick out like a sore thumb, I don't want to be the stereotypical black person that's never on time come n we gotta go." Lance said as he started walking to the car. "You heard your cousin move your ass!" Aunt Linda said to Beigha and Brandon.
