FREYA MCKINNON GREW UP hearing the stories of how her family were murdered in cold blood. It was no secret in the Wizarding World that the McKinnons were avid supporters of the Order in the first war against Voldemort, paying the price for their avid defiance. Even the muggles knew the weight behind the McKinnon name; sure, to them, the McKinnons were wiped out in a freak accident, but even when they heard Freya's last name, they looked at her with pity in their eyes. Fraser McKinnon, Freya's beloved father, was the only surviving member of the McKinnon family from that fateful night onward, having lost his wife, parents and sister at the hands of the Death Eaters. A loss like that, even fourteen years later, could not be easily forgotten.

Even if the tragic backstory behind the McKinnon name wasn't so well known, young Freya could just look at her father to know something had happened. She could see it in his eyes every time he looked at her; the pain that came with remembering a loss. For she looked just like his younger sister, Marlene, save for her eyes. Freya had her mother's eyes. Oh, how Fraser missed his wife and sister. Without them, he struggled to find his purpose; his job, the Order and his daughter were all he had to help him through the harder days.

But the problem with looking like a dead woman whose name held so much power and pressure was the expectations that came with it. Everyone who remembered the great Marlene McKinnon looked at Freya and saw her aunt, they looked at her and expected them to be the same. Only she wasn't. Where Marlene was exceptional at magic, Freya was not. Where Marlene was born for the house of red and gold, Freya strayed towards the house of black and yellow. Where Marlene was confident in every decision she made, Freya often wondered if she amounted to anything. The only good quality she truly loved about herself was her ability to play Quidditch and her love for photography. Other than that, she looked at herself and saw her failure to live up to her aunt's legacy, to who everyone needed her to be.

And with the second wizarding war just around the corner, that disappointment in herself was stronger than ever. But the only person who seemed to see that was, miraculously, George Weasley. It started with a playful Quidditch rivalry but somehow turned into so much more.
