As I'm walking to the exit of the college building, I feel my phone buzzing in one of the back pockets of my jeans.
christina: hey girlie! are you free rn? i'll come pick you up so we can go and have lunch together ;)
eleanor: i just finished my last class of the day, i'm at the exit xx
I always walk to my classes since I love being outdoors, hence Christina's text. I feel like the world is so underappreciated, I find it absolutely stunning and it's a shame barely anyone else sees it too. Sure, technology can be great, for listening to music and to express your feelings for example, which is what I do, but a lot of people use it to such an extent that it takes over their lives and as a result, they don't realize how much prettier the outside world is than the virtual one. A whole new world opens before your eyes when you actually open them.
After a few minutes of listening to Happiness Begins by the Jonas Brothers, to which I always softly sing along to, I walk over to the parking lot to which I see Christina pulling up to.
"Hey El! How were your classes?" Christina asked cheerfully as always, while we hugged as I sat down in the passenger's seat
"They were really great actually, we talked about France's landscape. Oh! Did you know Europe's tallest peak, Monte Blanc, in the French Alps is 15 780 feet tall-" I started as I closed the car door
"Alright nature enthusiast, gosh. You sure you're not a resurrected geographer?" Christina smiles, stopping me from continuing
"To the thinker, everything is and remains a riddle." I respond smiling while looking out the window and fiddling with the hem of my hoodie sleeve
"... did you just-"
"I sure did." I laugh, turning my head to see Christina rolling her eyes playfully and smiling at my von Humboldt reference while we arrive at Starbucks
"Oh there they are." Christina smiles while she holds the door open for me and looks at a group of guys seated by a table from which a familiar blonde is waving at us
"They?" I question as we walk over to their table at the far back of the shop
"Yeah, I invited Corbyn and his bandmates for lunch." She responds when she puts her arm over my shoulder
"Hey guys! I brought my roommate Eleanor too. Eleanor, this is Jonah, Jack, Zach, Daniel and Corbyn, but you already knew him." She beams
I look at the table and try to remember who's who by using a mnemonic for each boy.
Jonah is the tall one, Jack the tiniest, Zach the red-cheeked, and Daniel the blue-eyed one.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you, even though Christina didn't tell me about us going out to lunch with five others." I smile while nudging her on her side
"I didn't want you to bail on me El, come on!" Christina nudges me back as she takes a seat next to her boyfriend
Daniel chuckles and makes room for me to sit next to him as the others laugh too.
"Why would you bail on her?" He asks me while leaning back to the large couch we're sitting on, Christina and Corbyn leave to get our lunch and the three other guys are starting their own conversation about gift nut baskets..?
"Well, I'm not exactly the outgoing type-"
"Every time I ask her to go to a party with me she refuses to go!" Christina interferes, cutting herself and me off while she was ordering her drink
"Why won't you go?" Daniel asks leaning forward with his elbows on the table, his eyes never leaving mine
"Parties really just aren't my thing..." I say looking down, pulling my hoodie's sleeve over my fingers
"What is your thing then?" He questions, trying to get me to look back up again by softly touching my arm
"I like to travel. A lot. I really like it actually, I love exploring new areas whether it's big cities, small old villages or hiking trails down the woods." I respond, my smile growing bigger throughout the sentence
Daniel smiles a genuine, heartwarming and toothy smile as Christina and Corbyn come back with our table's lunch as I start to blush and put my fabric covered hands to my cheeks and look away.
