We had been living here for five days now. The fire was beginning to fade again and the cold was creeping in. ‘’Go get some more wood while I watch Eos,’’ I said. “I got them last time, why do I have to get them again?” My brother replied. Even in a cave after our mother died we still could not get along. My brother Apollo is 3 years younger than me and not very useful for survival. His name Apollo, the god of medicine and healing though he has never healed anything other than the broken heart of his ex-girlfriend. My brother is not very brave but i got to admit he is smart, maybe even smarter than me though i would never admit that out loud. My name, Persephone means the goddess of the underworld, who went down to hell and came right back up. My step-sister who is only 5 years old and very sick is named after the greek goddess of the dawn. We are all named after a greek god or goddess. My mother said it was a tradition in her family. My mothers name was Maia, after the spring goddess and also the most beautiful, and she truly was beautiful.
My brother finally realizes there is no point in arguing with me and leaves to get more wood to keep the fire on. I thought of my mother as tears streamed down my face and couldn’t help but think it was my fault she died and we were here. What was a week ago feels like a year ago. Apollo, Eos, my mother and I lived in the woods our whole life. It was like a normal day and i begged my mother to take us in the middle of the woods to watch the sunset. We were walking back home and it had gotten dark. I thought i had heard a car but nobody else seemed to hear it so i thought i had imagined it. About 3 minutes later my mother pushed us all out of the road and started to run but was not fast enough. She had gotten hit by the car and was still alive, but she told us not to look at her. “Don’t come near me Persephone and don’t let your brother or sister either. I am not a very pretty sight right now and i don’t want any of you to have nightmares,” Eos was crying and shaking next to me all the while i was dumfounded, “Mommy… Are you going to be okay?.” My mother never replied to that and we all heard our mother take her last breath. I shed some tears but tried to be strong for my sister. Apollo tried to hide it but i knew he had been crying.
Eos started to turn, I felt her forehead and it was warmer than normal.
“ Pera..,” Eos coughed.
“Shhh, im right here, how do you feel?”
“Where is mommy?”
“She is not her right now,” I murmured, wiping my tears and wrapping the blanket around Eos and I tighter. I heard some footsteps and grabbed the knife Apollo had carved for me, but it was only Apollo back with the wood.
