Shaking my head staring at the black Cadillac, I don't know if the move is to ask Miguel for a ride. It's either ask. Or walk home. Walking home from downtown LA to the valley would be a nightmare. Speed walking back towards the parking lot, I convinced myself, worst case, I'll borrow his car charger for five minutes to charge my phone. I make it to Miguel's car and knock on the window with love. Miguel rolls down the window only a tad, "What's the problem? Did you leave something in the car?" I peeked my eyes through the crack and reply, "Hey Miguel, I don't mean to bother you, but my phone is dead. Do you have an iPhone charger in there I could use for a few minutes?"
Now staring eye to eye through this small window opening, Miguel doesn't respond but unlocks the doors, "Thanks Miguel, it'll be quick." I open the door and jump into the passenger seat of the vehicle. Miguel still quiet, hands me the wire, "Thank you."
I plug my iPhone into the car and rest the phone inside the cup holder. Like most of the moments inside the car today have gone, more awkward silence occurs. Again though, I try to break the ice, "Have you worked with Selena for a long time?"
"Since she was fifteen."
"Oh wow that's a long time."
"She's like a daughter to me. Great girl. I'd do anything for her."
"I know the feeling, I have a younger sister. Although I don't know Selena well like you do, the few hours I've been able to experience around her have been like a dream. Such a random day."
"Yeah you're lucky for sure. I've never seen her do such a thing before and believe me, I've seen a lot. Especially with her. You wouldn't believe what some fans ask for, or expect from her. She deals with a lot, but handles it well."As Miguel and I chat, I check my phone. As cool as Miguel was being, I did not want to over stay my welcome. While Miguel continues on about a fan encounter, I realize for some reason the charger connection to my phone isn't working. The phone won't connect. My phone hasn't been charging nor seems like it will. Unsure how to bring this up or what to do, I wait for Miguel to finish his story.
"And then they try to ask me if I want to join! How do you-Miguel's cellphone interrupts his story, "Excuse me for a sec... What's up Mario. Ok. Are you sure? I have no problem waiting a little longer if you're uncertain. I'm still right out front in the lot by the side door... Ok... Copy that. See you tomorrow."
Miguel hangs up the phone, "That was Mario, he's taking them back. I'm going home. Is your phone charged?"
"It actually won't charge. It hasn't been. Something's up with the connection."Miguel laughs and shakes his head, "I swear you're the luckiest kid on the planet. Here, type in your address, I'll give you a ride."
Miguel hands me his phone. Relieved and surprised, I type in my address, "Thanks Miguel. I don't live far. I'm right off in the valley."
"It's fine kid. Don't worry about it. Let's get out of here."Miguel puts the Cadillac in drive and pulls away. Off we go. After twenty minutes of listening to music on the U.S. 101 North, we've reached my apartment.
"See you around kid."
"Thanks for the ride Miguel."
"Don't mention it. Hey, did you at least get a picture together or something to remember the moment?"
"I'm actually going to the listening party tomorrow."
"Haha, you don't say? Look at you! Luckiest kid on the planet back on the move. Should have known. She must like you. Don't F it up. I'll put my recommendation in. See you tomorrow then. Take it easy."
"Thank you!! You too! Hey do you know what time the event is tomorrow?"
"8pm."
"Ok cool, thank you Miguel!"
"Don't mention it."I exit the car and close the door. Juggling with my keys, I am at a complete awe with todays events. After getting inside my apartment, I fall right into my La-Z-boy chair. Unsure who to call first, I decide to reach out to my sister. The biggest Selena Gomez fan of them all.
