Prologue
"Have you ever dreamed you were falling? Ever been in that state between consciousness and deep sleep were your legs are running but you are laying in bed? It's a survival instinct triggered when your mind let's off warning signals, engrained in our souls to enable your survival. But this isn't always about protecting your life, oh no. Sometimes our bodies tap into a sixth sense that can lead you to something important, a premenition of sorts that can change your life for better or worse. Some call it Fate, but we know better. We call it The Faith."
Desari pulled back the metal chamber on the gun, inspecting the carved bullets for the fifth time that evening.
"All animals possess a certain level of The Faith, most of them only have a small sense of it but those with less are usually the first to be taken down," she paused looking towards Shea with a humourless smile as she let the chamber spring back,
"Survival of the fittest."
Cringing at her cold words Shea looked out the eighth story window unto the grayish blue rain that was falling in torrents outside.
People of all classes ran across the busy roads of New Mensah, trying to get out of the rain.
Many were holding umbrellas whilst hastily talking on the phone, others held books above their heads sheltering as much of themselves as they could, but they all wore the same frustrated expression; why did it have to be me?
The weaker class of people stood out more, they walked with slumped shoulders, timid expressions and allowed passers by to shove past them as if they were invisible.
"Don't feel pity for those who won't fight for themselves," Desari said calmly
"The chances are they will get you killed"
"You felt pity for me" Shea whispered, her amber eyes held hurt and accusation in them.
Placing the gun down on the stainless steel counter Desari approached Shea. Cupping her pale cheek in her palm Desari stroked the soft skin with her thumb removing a silvery tear.
"That was not pity, that was Love."
