Chapter 2: Ben
Ben watched her go, mentally kicking himself for his rudeness. It was just that he had
been so shocked. First, he had been surprised when he collided with her in the doorway. Then
she had looked up at him and his mind had just frozen. She was honestly one of the most
beautiful women he had ever laid eyes—or hands—on. He had been suddenly aware that he
was holding her very close to himself.
Then he saw the crown and realized she was royalty.
That combined with her comment and the situation just got awkward. He said the
first thing on his mind, and everything snowballed from there. It ended in her stalking away,
probably to plan his execution.
Ben considered running after her to apologize, but put it out of his mind. He had more
important things to think about at the moment and he was already late.
He worked his way across the edge of the crowded ballroom toward an older man in a guard’s
uniform. Hardly anyone noticed as he passed. Ben dipped his head as he approached the man and
said, “Father.”
“Benjamin,” his father, Sir Richard Lombard, greeted without taking his eyes off the mingled
crowd, “where have you been.”
“I had business to attend to.”
“And this business was more important than the safety of her majesty and her guests?” Sir
Lombard raised his eyebrows but did not look at his son.
“Of course not, father,” replied Ben, hanging his head slightly, “I apologize. It will not happen
again.”
“It had better not,” his father warned, finally turning his eyes away from the guests. “Remember,
our family’s legacy may induce the Captain to review you for the Royal Guard, but that doesn’t mean he
has to accept you. You must prove yourself to be worthy and before that you must become worthy inthe first place.”
“I understand, father.”
Sir Lombard examined the crowd again, “You are due for review in just four days. Do not
disappoint me. Or our family.”
“I won’t, father.”
Together father and son surveyed the splendor of their surroundings, yet there seemed to be an
uncrossable distance between them.
