Madelaine 'elaine' Laurent when you ask the residents of mystic falls about her. They all seem to describe her in similar words. A druggie, an alcoholic, a slut, a bad influence always somewhere around those words. The one question they always ask themselves is how did she turn out such a disappointment. When her mother, Valeria Laurent, is such a successful and respectable woman.

But what they didn't know is that Valeria is probably one of the most horrible mothers. Since age 3, she had left Madelaine under the care of their maid, Grace Haney, to travel around the world with different men. Only coming home when she got bored of them while using the excuse of wanting to see her daughter. Although lacking a mother, Madelaine saw Grace as a mother figure. She was happy.

Then at age 12 her life hit a curb for the worse. Grace had disappeared out of nowhere. The only love and affection she received gone just like that but with it came the consolation of her mother. Who stayed for a month to console her until she eventually left like always. Madelaine tried to make friends with the rest of the staff but her attempts at friendship were ignored so back to the lonely little girl she was again.

Lonely and left to fend for herself. Madelaine did what every stereotypical neglected child does. She became friends with the wrong crowd. By 13 she had smoked her first joint and by 14 she attended her first high school party. Where she lost her virginity to a 16 years old boy. From there her life spiraled downhill.

Deep down Madelaine knew the sex, drugs, and booze weren't making her truly happy. But she knew it was better to be numb then to finally realize. She was truly and utterly alone. All she wanted was someone to help her out of the hole she had dug herself in. Then she met him, Alexander 'alex' Henrik Mikaelson who saw the light in her darkness. He wanted to help her but everyone knows the road to recovery is never smooth.
