Of course there had to be something wrong. You'd asked Kami about it- "Does he seem upset to you?" No, he didn't think so. But as much as you loved him, Kaminari was dumb to all emotion, so you don't really know what you'd expected him to say. You'd asked Kirishima- "Do you know what's bothering him?" He'd told you no, he didn't. You're pretty sure he was lying; Kirishima knew everything about Bakugo, even if he hadn't deigned to tell him. He was good at reading people, and he was Bakugo's closest friend.
It hadn't even occured to you that Bakugo could be truly upset, if you were honest. He was always angry, but you were confident that his anger at least partailly came from a good place. It was a place of confidence and ambitious drive that you wish you could find within yourself on the best of days. But this was a whole new kind of angry, even for him. He was avoiding you, and he hadn't bothered to avoid you... ever. Whenever you saw Bakugo, he made himself at home in your personal space, or leaned on something a few feet away to insult you. It had bothered you, once upon a time, but you were used to it by now. Bakugo was Bakugo, and you'd come to realize that was just how he interacted with people. Or at least with you. You tried to keep in mind that with him, insults were born from a sense of comradery.
If you were being honest, you kind of hated it more when he wasn't insulting you. Except for those couple times- the pop-tart incident, of course, and a few others- where Bakugo had gone too far. You didn't like to dwell on those moments too much. He was always saying something, and it might feel insignificant, but you knew very well that if he was asking for attention, he really did need it. He wasn't good at asking. He was good at taking. You didn't really mind anymore if he forced himself into a seat next to you, or dragged you closer to him. It had just caught you by surprise once or twice, and scared you. You knew he felt horrible each time.
It had been a good few weeks since the last time Bakugo had sat anywhere even close to you, relaxing or otherwise. He'd switched seats with Kami in class, much to Aizawa's displeasure, as Kaminari was a loudmouth and your combined energy levels were well higher than he preferred. But your teacher hadn't told them to move back, barely even commented when you and Kaminari were fooling around. You'd seen him talking to Bakugo after class on the first day they'd switched, and you'd caught a couple words. "Can't focus when-" before you'd been dragged to lunch by Kami. You're pretty sure he knew something about it, but it felt rude to pry.
Now, you were in hero training class. You and Bakugo had been paired together for the first time in a while- a week at least. You used to be partners at least once or twice a week, if not more. Bakugo would grab you by the arm when you were allowed to choose your own partners, and when you were grouped by the teacher, you'd often end up together as well. Your class was, after all, pretty small.
"Hey, shouty," you greeted. It was sarcastic, and kind of shallow. You lacked the farmiliarity you'd had before, when you'd talked more often. Internally, you winced. Bakugo looked down at you, frowned, and looked away again.
"What?" he asked, huffing. You frowned now, too. He was angry at you, wasn't he? You hadn't been sure if he was upset about something else, and didn't feel like dealing with you, or if you'd actually done something to make him mad. You wondered what it was you'd done.
"I was just saying hi," you mumbled, and looked at your shoes. You missed him glance back at you and then away again. He didn't say anything. Great, you thought. Of course he hates me. He doesn't even want to yell at me or anything. Just keep ignoring me. What could you have possibly done to constitute that? The drill started. The pairs of students seperated, moving off in different directions for close-combat training. You follow Bakugo mutely, head down, and barely even noticed when you stopped, and he squared his feet to start. You blinked, getting into ready stance, and then your fighting began.
