I looked up at the high school building I had been going to for the past three years. The building was made up of the same old, red bricks with the same old ivy plants trying to engulf the building whole. At the entrance, the rusted doors stood open as freshman students shuffled inside for the first day of class. Everyone else stood around the parking lot and some sat by the stairs, all catching up with friends they hadn't seen since June.
As for the seniors, these were all the same faces I had grown up with and had seen for 180 days a year for 11 years. Sure, puberty had molded some faces more than others, shaping some to be attractive while others got the short end of the stick. Nevertheless, everyone was familiar with each other, and there is a sense of safety that comes with familiarity. Which is why I wasn't surprised when some of my fellow classmates openly stared at me as I stepped out of my silver car, the same one I had driven to campus for an entire year. Instead of the dork they had come to expect to step out of the car, if anyone really cared enough to have expectations, I stepped out. I adjusted the shades on my face as I started walking toward the Madison High School building with a smirk on my face. I could already tell this was going to be an interesting last year.
