So for this chapter, it's going to be in Josie's mom's point of view. She is from Mexico but immigrated here for better job opportunities. She can speak English, and while it's understandable, if she has the opportunity to speak Spanish, she will. So the dialogue will be in English for the first little bit, but it will get transferred to Spanish later on. However, the part that isn't dialogue will be in English. Just consider that part an automatic translation. To understand the dialogue, you can use Google Translate. Thanks for reading. Gracías para legend!
Josie's Mother María Valdecañas POV:
I was in New York due to my job when I got the call. "Mrs. Valdecañas?" I heard the person on the other line ask when I answered.
"Yes. Who this?" I asked, voice raised in curiosity. Not perfect English but good enough. I made my Spanish accent really heavy in case it was spam, though it was almost 11:00 at night.
"This is Josie's doctor. I'm sure by now, you know that we had to perform emergency surgery on Josie due to the tumour that frees too big. We tried to notify you, but you did not respond. We notified your husband."
"Yes. He told me. What happened? Is Josie ok?"I asked, panic rising in my tone.
"No...ummm...I've never had to do this over the phone, but your husband did not want to call you."
"Ay, just spit it out. No seas gilipollas," I said, holding the laugh that so badly wanted to escape because he didn't know what it meant.
"Solo cállate y escúchame en Lugar de insultarme." He replied bitterly. I was not expecting that. I sat up in my office chair and asked if we could speak in Spanish over the phone. As much as I hate to admit it, I always get embarrassed when I speak English.
"Sí, pero no creo que hablemos mucho Cuando te cuente las Noticias Sobre Josie," He said.
"Por que? Está todo bien con Ella?" I ask.
"No. Ella desafortunadamente no logró Pasar la cirugía. Lo Siento." He sayd somberly.
"Que? No, no, no, no, no. Tú eres un mentiroso!" I cry, covering my mouth in shock. After that, I hung up and got to the airport as soon as possible.
Ay Dios Mio. I kept thinking. Mi Hija...Lo siento. Lo siento, no fui la madre perfecta. Todo lo que siempre quise fue que tuvieras una vida mejor que la mía, y ahora nunca la tendrás. Te amo.
I left work early and rushed to the airport. I had to get back to Josie. They had to be lying, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that they weren't lying.
I bought my ticket, and by 6:30 the next morning, I was back at home. I grabbed yet another taxi and rushed to the hospital.
When I got there, Monsé was sitting in a chair balled up and crying with her mother by her side.
"Ay, Monsé."
She looked up, her face was red and had tear streaks going down each side of her face. Her mom stood up, defensive.
"Excuse me. Do I know you?"
"No. Pero, your daughter know me", I said, mentally cringing at my English.
"Monsé, do you know this woman?", the tall, black lady asked her daughter. Her voice was light and gentle. Like she didn't want to hurt her daughter anymore than she already was.
Monsé looked up at me, and lightly nodded.
She sniffed and quietly said, "I am so sorry for your loss, Mrs. V."
I sat in the chair next to her and brought her to my chest as I wrapped her in a hug we both so desperately needed. "It's ok, Cariño. We did not know this was going to happen." I said, solemnly. Completely choosing to forget her outburst from a few days earlier.
I stood up and looked at Monsé's mother. "Hi. I am María. I Josie's mom. Or was Josie's mom." I said as a single tear rolled down my cheek. I held out my hand for her to shake.
As she registered what I said, sadness creeped onto her face. She slowly came up with the words to say. She looked regretful. 'I-I am so...so sorry. I can understand how horrible you must feel. I am so sorry I talked to you like that earlier. It's just, I'm very protective of my little Mo. She's all I have left. Her sister died a while back. But I still feel like it was yesterday sometimes.
I was just about to say something when an alarm went off, and all the doctors rushed into a room.
"Mom.", Monsé said, fear intertwined with her voice. "That's the room Josie's in."
