What's His Name?

When I woke up the next morning, I put on my clothes and got ready for school. I took courses at the local college and had an 8 am class. When I walked into my Asian Studies class, I saw my friend Zee. Zee and I knew each other during high school and made sure that our schedules matched for college.

"Hey girl!" I said

"Hey!"

"You'd never believe what happened. I was at work yesterday and met the love of my life"

"What's his name?"

"See the thing is I don't remember, but I'm going to see him at work today and see his name tag and then I'll remember again!"

'Whatever Tamia, I'll believe it when I see it. You sound crazy!"

"I don't really care how I sound, I care that he'll be mine, and you'll see."

The professor walked in right when I finished my sentence. The boring day went by, and I was just excited that I had something to look forward to at work. When I started this job last month, I wasn't sure if I could do it. I was dealing with going back and forth to school every day trying to get my degree, taking care of my alcoholic friend Maya and overall just figuring out who I was. I mean, I'm nineteen. I have so much to look forward to. The only reason I was even at the job was because my internship for the semester fell through. I would say my future is bright. On the two hour ride to work, I was only worried about all the studying I had to do for my test next week.

Once I walked into the store, I saw all my friends at the registers. This means it's going to be a great day. I quickly put my sweater in my locker and got to work putting items away and checking people out. It quickly became 6 o'clock which is the time the boy usually got to work but he didn't show up. This went on for days, and I refused to check the schedule for his days. Instead, I went and asked Devin.

"Hey Devin, how's your little friend? I haven't seen him in a while, is he okay?"

"Who? Tyrone?" He started laughing. "You know, we all figured you liked him but we weren't sure. The girls always do"

My perky smile stopped right away. "All the girls?"

"Yeah, every job we've worked at he's gotten tied up with some girl and he had to quit.

Okay then. This meant that my plan had to change. I couldn't be like all the other girls, because that would mean that I was basic, which means that I had to be better than them. I had to find a way to make it seem like I didn't like him, and get close enough to have him fall in love with me. This meant that the plan had to be perfect.

" What did you say his name was again?"

"Tyrone Mitchell"

"Great!" I said running off. I finished my shift in silence. I had to find a way to stand out.
