Hello there Everyone. Xilan Javier, a friend of Penn Zero, Boone Wiseman and my Sashi Kobayashi. I am here to discuss each preventive measures that are used during the pandemic of COVID-19. This lecture discuss how each preventive measures work and how it is effective it.
Hand washing with soap is one of the most efficient way of ridding viruses onto your skin. Here's why.
Soap is made out of fats and oil, water and lye (sodium hydroxide), which the molecules of the soap consist of a hydrophilic head (water loving) and a hydrophobic tail (water hating), which makes the soap feel slippery when reacted to water.
Now a general virus has 3 components: The glycoprotein or protein spikes (which helps the virus attach to the cell), the lipid bilayer (a layer that incases in the materials inside and also have a hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail) and the nucleic acid or the genetic material (which helps the virus to multiply by infecting it to a host)
When the presence of virus is on your skin and you washed it with water and soap. The soap molecules float around the water, and when those free-floating soap molecules attracts to the virus, the hydrophobic tail enters the hydrophilic head of the virus and aggregates the hydrophobic tail of the virus, loosening the layer and breaking it apart forming a micelle (a sperichal molecule created by lipid molecules), leaving the genetic material of virus free-floating in the water with no means of entering the cell.
Notes:
× Washing your hands with only water does not work on the virus, it just splashes on it, but not carrying it away.
× Small amount of soap molecules only loosens the bilayer, not completely breaking it. More amount of soap molecules does the trick.
× Washing your hands with soap and water below 20 seconds is not enough to rid all of the virus on your skin.Hand sanitizers are another way of preventive measures when soap and water are unavailable.
Hand sanitizers are mostly compose of ethanol or ethyl alcohol (chemicals found in most booze) or isopropanol or isopropy alcohol (chemicals found in rubbing alcohol) and sometimes glycerol (which makes hand sanitizers their gel-like structure.)
They work in a similar way like soap and water. By having a polar (hydrophilic) part of their chemical formula, they disrupt the protein and lipid layer of the virus and leaving their genetic material out in the open.
Notes:
× 60 - 95% is the recommended concentration to effectively kill the virus.
× Isopropyl and ethyl alcohol makes your hands dry, which is why glycerol counteracts that drying effect on your skin (also some anti-drying additives are put in there.)
× Make sure that your hand sanitizers are alcohol-based, if hand sanitizers have antibiotics, it might lead to further infect other people.
× Though ethyl alcohol is found in booze, it is the concentration and the nature of the ethyl alcohol that makes it different from drinking alcohol.
× Hand sanitizers does not substitute for washing with soap and water, because it is ineffective with dirts and other contaminants for they can not penetrate dirt and grease like soap can.Face masks or surgical masks are the masks that is use to cover your mouth and nose (not the mask that covers your entire face and used on costumes. C'mon guys. Be real.😑)
A face mask or a surgical mask is compose of three layers: The outer hydrophobic layer, which is the colored side, is the layer that keeps out fluids like blood, water and etc. to enter your nose and mouths. The middle filter layer, which filters out the bacteria and viruses from entering or leaving the mask. And finally, the inner hydrophilic, which absorbs the sweats, saliva and other fluids and prevents them from leaving the mask.
There different types of mask with their pros and cons. Here are some examples below:
Notes:
× The colored side should be outside, so no fluid or droplets can enter.
× The mask have a filtration layer in order to capture the virus and bacteria that tries to enter or leave the body.
× Mask can be worn by infected person to prevent infecting others and non-infected person to prevent being infected.
× Surgical masks are supposed to be disposable, it is a one time use, once used, throw it away in proper garbage dispenser.References:
