I froze at the sound of Justin’s voice, low and eerily calm, my breath hitching in my throat.
Shit, shit, shit.
What the hell was I supposed to say?! ‘Yeah, I was, oops sorry! Haha! Hope you’re not too mad that I was snooping through what looks to be your most private possession! Want another coffee?’
Even just a tiny glance at the boy stood beside me revealed that he was mad. Like, really mad. His deep brown eyes seemed to have darkened to an impossible shade, conveying all the anger that he was undoubtedly feeling. What probably made me feel even worse though was the faint blush that had tinged his tanned cheeks – I’d embarrassed him. He was ashamed about me reading his thoughts and feelings, and he had every right to feel that way.
“Well?” His harsh voice interrupted my thoughts, demanding and unapologetic. I didn’t see the point in lying – I’d royally screwed up and I had to say sorry.
“Justin, I’m really -,” I began quietly, staring down at my fingers as they tangled together anxiously, but a humourless laugh cut me off.
“Save it. What made you think you could do that?” His voice was loud as he stormed towards the table, slamming the journal, as he had called it, closed and grabbing it into his large hand. He ripped his coat from the back of his chair, his still burning hot coffee practically untouched.
“I don’t know! I don’t have an excuse, I’m just really sorry!” I started panicking as he moved towards the door, the rain lashing down outside mirroring my mood that was now lower than anything. He couldn’t leave, I’d only just managed to start talking to him after months of thinking about holding a conversation with the beautiful, mysterious writer.
I never thought I’d end up ruining everything before it even began.
Just as he grabbed the handle, he turned back to look at me, pure fury etched onto his gorgeous features.
“I don’t know you, and you certainly have no idea who I am – and you never will. Especially not now.” With that, he yanked the door open and stepped out into the storm, leaving me embarrassed and severely pissed off with myself in the now empty café.
I’d locked up the coffee shop early, only about 15 minutes after Justin had left. For a good few minutes I’d simply stood there, staring out of the window along the path that he’d stormed off down, trying to process what had just happened.
I’d been caught reading a customer’s most private possession, and now he hated my guts.
Awesome.
Not just a customer, but a guy I’d really wanted to get to know. A seemingly intelligent, devastatingly handsome, hugely mysterious man, who’d clearly not been having the best day anyway, judging by how he acted at the start of our conversation.
As I made my way through the back doors and out into the staff parking lot, the raindrops forcing themselves down the back of my jacket and to the bottom of my shoes, I couldn’t tell whether the endless moisture on my face was from the sky or my tears. Judging by the heaviness of my heart, it was probably the latter.
