Pride is the root cause of idolatry because when you commit idolatry you are going against God's will of Him wanting us to worship Him as He is truly worthy of all the praise and worship. When commiting the sin of idolatry you are deeming that thing or object, or person, or even yourself as the one who is worthy of praise and worship instead of God, when you are filled with pride you try to glorify yourself and instead of praising and worshiping God you praise and worship yourself through your pride.
When commiting the sin of idolatry the root cause behind it is pride because you are defying God's command of worshiping Him and instead you are putting your will above God's will and are worshipping yourself or someone else or some thing or object instead of the One True Living God.
