Before the Snap of Thanos, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts had a 12 year old daughter; Amelia. A 12 year old daughter Tony left behind whilst he was off to fight Thanos in space.
After Captain Marvel saved Tony and Nebula, from dying in space, he came home to find Pepper and Amelia still home and unaffected from the Snap. Tony didn't want to risk what he had and refused to join the avengers to risk everything he just got back.
Until he figured the formula of time travel through the quantum realm.
