When the bell rang, signaling lunch, Simon and Abel stood next to each other in line. They talked to each other happily as they walked the long halls.
"So, you come from New York?"
Simon asks.
"Uh huh, the city that never sleeps."
"Cool."
As they entered the chatty cafeteria, Simon noticed Susan and a group of girls giggling and snickering at the two boys. Oh great, first day and already made new enemies. Simon tolled his eyes as he took one last glance at the group. When the friends sat down at the table after getting their food.
"Have you tried the lunch on Mondays? They know us, Simon! They serve pizza!"
"I see. Looks delicious."
After they ate, they went to recess. In the middle of a game of tag, one of the girls from the group approached Simon.
"Hi, you're Simon, correct?"
Simon sounds to face the girl. She had dark, brown hair and tan skin. Wearing a teal shirt and ripped navy blue jeans.
"Yeah, why?"
"I'm Evelyn."
"Nice to meet you, Evelyn."
They shook hands. They had a friendly conversation before Abel came.
"Hey, Evelyn."
"What's up?"
Simon had a strange feeling. He couldn't trust Evelyn. He watched her come from the group, he watched her talk to Susan and the others. He knew he shouldn't let Evelyn in. Not yet. He couldn't afford to be hurt emotionally. When recess was over, Abel and Simon walked to their lockers to get their stuff. As Simon walked to his class, Susan personally came over and shoved him to the ground.
"Hey!"
Simon shouted. He watched as Susan walked away, snickering. Simon felt like crying, but he had to be strong. He got up, dusted himself off and entered the class. All he had to do is hide his feelings.
