[A/N] Welp, I'm nervous about this story and I'm not sure whether I'll be continuing this. But, here it goes! (Apologies for grammar/spelling errors)

| Junior Year of High School, September |
Brysen's POV
"Shut the hell up, man," I shove Ben and he stumbles away.
"What? Did I say something wrong?" Ben says as he dribbles the ball. "I mean, everyone knows how you have this silly crush on Katie Reed since our freshman year. We are now in our junior year, and you still have not man the fuck up to ask her out."
Narrowing my eyes, I glare at him. "It's none of your damn business."
"Unless you're too chicken of course," he goads with a smirk on his face.
I have known Ben Miller for years because we are neighbours and him being the asshat that he is, is no surprise. It is after school and we are just randomly shooting hoops at the Miller's basketball court.
He tosses the ball at me and I catch it, before running to dribble it. "I'm not being a chicken. I just have not had the opportunity. So, lay off."
"If you're not going to do it, I'll do it. Then once I'm done with her, you can have her," Ben says as he takes the ball from me and shoots the ball into the hoop with ease.
I know that he is just saying that to rile me up and does not mean it but it still gets to me. "Don't talk about Katie that way, asshole."
"Then ask. Her. Out."
"I will alright. She's my friend so there's no need to rush."
"Yeah, your friend...because clearly you've been friendzoned."
Clenching my jaw, I reply, "I have not been friendzoned. You know what, I'll ask her out tomorrow."
"Really now?" he cocks his eyebrow.
"Yes," I say through gritted teeth. "Now, shut the fuck up about it."
Ben just lets out another laugh before going back to dribbling the ball. As he dribbles away, I catch sight of the girl sitting on the front porch of her house situated opposite the Miller's.
Melanie Williams.
Melanie is Katie's best friend. Everyone always say how opposite they are of each other. While Katie had straight hair in the perfect shade of strawberry blonde, Melanie's hair was a dark shade of brown, almost black, that falls in waves down her back. Katie was tall while Melanie was slightly shorter. Katie was outgoing, always cheerful. Now, I don't mean that Melanie is some emo gothic girl who is always moody. She is just quiet and painfully shy but at the same time really, very smart.
She's looking down at her lap, reading something. Not a book, more like a tablet of some sort. Her long hair forms a curtain to hide her face. As though sensing someone is looking at her, she looks up and her eyes scans around till it lands on me. She tilts her head slightly. I am not sure why but I suddenly become nervous.
The thing is, even though I am friends with Katie and Melanie is her best friend, Melanie and I don't exactly talk to each other in school. In fact, I feel as though she hates me because each time I try to talk to her - no wait, I try to even make eye-contact with her, she looks away. I am not exactly sure what did I do to her so you can imagine my slight surprise when she did not look away this time when her eyes landed on me.
Raising my hand, I smile widely and give her a wave. I am not sure why my heart starts to race a little because what the fuck? I have a crush on her best friend, not her. It is probably because of the fact that she has always avoided me so I was anticipating what she would do this time. Yeah, that's it.
