Hermione gasped as Harry's name was called out. Subconsciously, Ron's grip tightened over Harry's hand. The trio pressing against each other as Dumbledore stared into Harry's eyes. Students were now facing them. Fear was in the air in a thick fog, and the tension was high.

"Weasley, Ronald." The sorting hat announced before Harry got up. Ron paled as Dumbledore looked surprised. He turned to the hat before hiding his surprise. A few professors had equal looks of shock. Harry spotted several first years clinging to one another just as he was with his partners. Dread grew as Dumbledore frowned with displeasure.

"Granger, Hermione!" Hermione was trying not to cry. Ron gripped her hand tightly, but not painfully. Questions ran through her head as she desperately held onto her boys. The Hat, although expressionless due to lack of most facial features, seemed tense. A few other names were called, and some students cried when they heard their name. Harry however, had yet to move, along with the rest of the student body. Ron wrapped his legs into the mess of limbs that occupied Hermione's and Harry's legs. It felt strange, and made Hermione's foot fall asleep, but the three were in emotional turmoil from the moment their names were called.

The Hat was quickly silenced as the names were said. A parchment the size of an adult ringneck snake. Harry shuddered as he stared at the list.

"Harry Potter, come up for your resorting!" Dumbledore shouted, holding the hat in his hands as he left the list stuck to the podium. McGonagall was quick to grab a chair as Hermione and Ron let go of Harry's legs from theirs.

"Whatever you get, we'll be there." Ron promised with a determined look. Harry bit his lip and looked at the ground.

"Even Slytherin?" His voice was shaky, he winced. Hermione smiled at him.

"Especially Slytherin." She said with a false sense of confidence. Harry took a deep breath before turning to Dumbledore. His green eyes shined with determination. Dumbledore chuckled softly, gesturing for Harry to come up with him. Harry walked swiftly, avoiding all the students' eyes as he made his way to the ex-deadman.

The hat was placed on his head as he sat down. Anxiety coursed through him as the hat began to speak mentally to him.

Mr. Potter, finally here for the correct choice? There's no changing my mind this time.

Anything but Slytherin. Please... I need to stay with Ron and Hermione.

Ha! Mr. Weasley and Ms. Granger have different houses already picked for them- Mr. Potter, I'll repeat what I said in first year. You'll do great things in Slytherin.

Why? How?

That's for me to know, and you to discover.

"Better be... Slytherin!" Hermione choked back a small cry. Ron paled and watched Harry as he tore the hat off his head. He could see how upset Harry was.

As he was summoned, he walked the same path Harry did. Harry had gone the same way to exit, they stopped for a moment. Ron had a sad grin on his face.

"See ya in the snake pit, mate?" Harry shrugged, but gave Ron a hug. Ron tightened his arms around the small boy then released him. Pressing a quick kiss to his temple, Ron went up to the hat.

Never before had Ron wished for an article of clothing to burst into flames so quickly.

Ah, Mr. Weasley. Finally realized you weren't meant for Gryffindor, have ya?

I don't want this. Let me be with Harry.

I'm afraid not. You're destined for more in a different house. Mr. Potter belongs to Salazar's house now. Where he meant to be since coming to this school.

Then what about me? And how will I see him? What about Hermione?

All will be revealed. Now, let's get you into your new home, shall we?

I want to be with Harry and Hermione.

To become great, you must leave them to their houses.

Please... I'll never be great without them. They make me happy!

Mr. Weasley, your time has come.

Bloody—

"Let him be... Ravenclaw!" Ron choked on air at this statement. Ravenclaw? He hadn't a smart bone in his body. He glanced to Hermione, she looked equally as shocked. Harry was waiting at the other side of the area. He had stopped after he and Ron hugged, waiting for the redhead.

Ron swallowed the lump developing in his throat. Pressing his tongue to the roof of his mouth and blinking back tears, he joined Harry. The pair, even when asked to go to their new tables by Professor Sprout, stayed until Hermione cautiously walked to them. She was shaking, but put on a brave face.

Harry saw right through it. As did Ron.

"Love you." Hermione told them as she passed. Ron reached out and touches her shoulder. She turns hurriedly.

"Love you too." Ron gave her a lopsided grin. Harry grasped her hand, bending down to a bow. He pressed a chaste kiss to her knuckles. Hermione blushed softly, face tinged pink as the group separated.

Hermione walked up to the stool. The hat was laid on her head, and she was instantly alert.

Ms. Granger, hello again.

Give me to them. I don't care which one, it's too late to all go into the same house.

Hermione, I believe you are well aware this isn't going to work a second time.

Please...

Resorting to begging? Ms. Granger, you have no choice in the matter. You belong in a different house. Gryffindor was right for the first year, but it was only temporary. A replacement to your true house. Now it is no match in your path to become a great witch.

Then, Ravenclaw?

Ms. Granger, you need to be placed. You are loyal to knowledge and friends. Be strong, build yourself in the house I see fit.

But—

Hufflepuff will grant you greatness.

I'm not great. Not without my boys.

"Let her be... Hufflepuff!"

The trio was quick to reconnect. They ignored Dumbledore's protests, moving out of the way of students as they hugged. Hermione was crying now, the lion on her robes was now her new houses animal. Harry stared at Ron's raven and Hermione's badger, and his chest hurt.

"I don't want to leave." Ron whispered with his fear evident in his voice. Hermione nodded through tears. Harry rubbed his thumb over her cheek to wipe away a tear.

"We'll be okay... we'll be alright." He said, more to convince himself than the other two.

As the last students of their year were resorted, prefects rounded up their house members.

"Slytherin, gather round!"

"Ravenclaw, over here!"

"Hufflepuff, to the dorms!"

The trio was heartbroken as they watched each other go.
