"Arrgghhh" Kara let a roar as she pushed herself to fly harder
She had already passed National City twice over but couldn't bring herself to stop flying. She could feel herself tiring, her emotions getting the better of her. How did she let this happen? How did she let the one good thing, the one greatest person in her life, slip through her fingers? How did she not realize Lena was hurting?
Eventually Kara began to slow down, controlling her breathing as she let the night air cool her frustrations. She hovered, for some time, over her apartment block before eventually deciding to fly down and in through her bedroom window. She changed into her sweatpants and one of Lena's sweaters that she left in Kara's for weekends on the sofa. Kara inhaled deeply, hoping to memorize Lena's scent before it was gone for good.
As she was changing, she hadn't notice that there was already someone in her apartment. She could hear rustling from the kitchen and cautiously, she left her room to see who could possibly want to break into the home of Supergirl.
"Gosh, Alex you could have texted me to say you were here, you scared me" Kara breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Alex pouring herself a glass of wine
"Oh, hey, sorry. I figured you were just out scanning the streets. I couldn't sleep so I came to see how you were. I know it hasn't been easy with Lena being away" Alex spoke softly as she moved across the room to settle herself on the sofa tucking her legs underneath her before patting the space next to her for Kara to come and sit
"Yeah, about that" Kara mumbled as she sat in next to Alex, trying to hold it all together as she fumbled with the inner tags of Lena's sweater
"What's up?" Alex shot a confusing look across at her sister curled up beside her
"She left me Alex" Kara breathed, the weight of her emotions now taking their toll as tears began to roll silently down her cheeks
"Oh Kara" Alex gushed, feeling her sister's heartbreak as she moved to bundle Kara up in her arms
"What happened?" Alex continued as she tried to pat away some of Kara's tears
"She said that being away and the constant fear of not knowing whether or not I'd come home every night was killing her. Me being Supergirl had become too much" Kara sobbed, trying to gather herself
"I understand the toll it must take on her but Alex, she – "Kara stuttered, not being able to utter the words that finish her sentence
"What is it Kara?" Alex hushed softly as she hugged her sister tighter
"I know she's falling for somebody else" Kara hung her head, defeated by the thought
"Kara sweetie, I'm so sorry" Alex consoled "I, I just don't know what to say. I know how much you love her, how badly you wanted your future to be with her"
Kara felt the weight of what Alex had just said smash into her chest like a ton of bricks. She tried so hard to hold it all together, but she broke into a thousand tiny pieces, Alex's arms the only thing stopping her from completely shattering to the floor.
A long silence followed; the two women not really sure what to say next. For Alex, the question of how do you heal the broken heart of the Girl of Steel? And for Kara, the simple fact of - where do I go from here?
How do you save a city filled with broken people when you're not sure how you can come to save yourself, when the one certain good in your life has walked away? These questions were heavy and filled with certain doubt. They weren't going to be answered that night, and certainly not tomorrow, but maybe, just maybe Kara could begin to slowly rebuild herself as the woman she knows she is, the woman she was without her. Without Lena.
