Before Sebastian could escort me up the staircase that lead to the second floor, a pink-haired young woman in a maid's uniform, a boy with clips in his blonde hair, and a tall man with a cigarette between his lips appeared from around a corner.
"Hey, Sebastian brought a girl home! That doesn't seem like him at all!" the tall man boomed.
"She's very pretty, yes!" the maid replied, light glittering on the thick lenses of her glasses.
"Where'd ya meet her, Sebastian-san?" the blonde boy asked, bouncing over to where the butler was standing.
I nearly cringed in nervousness from all the attention. "Is this what he meant when he mentioned the staff being eccentric?" I wondered to myself. I wanted to get away from them before they could notice my ears or tail.
Sebastian seemed to share my desire to escape them, though undoubtedly for different reasons; he looked highly annoyed. Addressing the tall man, he said, "Bard, prepare an extra meal tonight for Lady Ailsa." The way he referred to me as if I were a noblewoman made my heart flutter. Never in my life had anyone ever spoken to me this way. Turning to the maid and the blonde boy, he added, "You two, ready a guest room for her."
My eyes widened. "S-Sebastian-san," I tugged on his sleeve gently to gain his attention. Speaking softly, I continued, "Are you sure that it would be okay for me to stay here?"
He resumed walking up the stairs, nodding for me to follow him. "If my master allows you a room, I would prefer that it already be prepared for you. The house of Phantomhive prides itself on its exemplary hospitality." Neither of us spoke again until we reached a mahogany door. He knocked on it politely before announcing, "My lord, there is a guest here with a request for you."
I was taken aback by the youth I heard in the voice that called back through the door. "Send them away. Whatever they want can wait until morning."
"I'm afraid it can't, my lord. I assure you, I wouldn't allow a guest to request an audience at this time in the evening were it not important." Sebastian's persistence warmed my heart. After Lord Phantomhive's initial refusal, I had been prepared to walk back to London empty-handed.
After heaving a sigh that was audible even through the thick wood of the door, Lord Phantomhive replied, "Fine. Bring them in." A pit of nervousness grew in my stomach. I certainly wasn't dressed to meet anyone of high social standing! However, Sebastian offered me a brief but encouraging smile before opening the door to his master's study and leading me inside.
