Luke's POV

English class was slowly starting to fill up as everyone stumbled their way through the door like zombies.

It was first period on a Monday.

It was totally understandable.

I had been here for around 10 minutes already. It had sort of become a routine. My punctuality and eagerness to learn usually got me labelled as 'nerd' or 'freak' or got me weird looks and probably also explained why I had no friends. It didn't bother me anymore though. I had pretty much been a loner since year 7. Yup, that's right, one man party over here.

My pen tapped impatiently against the desk as the class waited for our teacher to arrive.

"Shut the hell up, Hemmings!" Jack Harper spat as he twisted round in his seat to shoot a glare at me. My pen instantly stilled and I sunk into my seat.

My eyes remained glued to the door waiting for our ditzy tutor, Miss Penny, to arrive any moment now, bounding into the room with a coffee cup glued to her right hand, a huge smile on her face babbling some dumb quote at us that was supposed to be inspiring. My thoughts were soon cut off as Ashton Irwin entered the room.

Wow, he had actually decided to turn up today.

He had a notepad tucked under his arm with a pen in his skinny jean pocket and silently, without making eye contact, edged his way to a desk at the back of the room.

The light in a few girls eyes faded as he ignored their efforts of clearing their desks for him to take the seat next to them causing me to roll my eyes. I honestly didn't get why they swooned over him so much.

The school's 'bad boy' is what they had labelled him.

Sure he smokes, sure he rides a motorbike, he doesn't turn up to most classes, he listens to punk music and yeah he wears leather a lot with a stupid bandana that pushed his messy hair out of his eyes, but I really didn't get the deal with this guy.

He took the seat at the back in the corner, kicking his feet up onto his desk and running his fingers through his wild, hair. He pulled out his phone from his pocket, plugging his headphones in his ears.

Miss Penny then came rushing through the door and, as predicted, she had a coffee cup attached to her right hand. Her usual brunette shoulder length locks tied up into a messy bun that sat on the top of her head. "i'm so sorry i'm late class" she began as she battled with the papers on her desk clearing them out of her way. She stopped in her tracks as she noticed Ashton slouched in a chair at the back of the room and she suddenly became a little flustered.

"Ashton!" she shrilled. "it's been a while since i've seen you in my class" she began quickly fixing her hair and smoothing down her skirt as Ashton peered up from his phone at her with a smile.
"i've missed you too miss P" he said with a wink and she seemed to stop breathing. I could have gagged. Was she really getting all hot and bothered over a student?! Then again, she was only 23 or so which wasn't too bad for us year 13's but still.

Miss Penny composed herself before carrying on

"This morning we are going to do a quick quiz" she told us as she began handing out papers in the room, purposely leaving Ashton till last. He didn't seem to notice when she bent down lower than was necessary to expose her cleavage when handing him his paper, he didn't even look up at her face.

I shifted my attention to Ben Granger sat in front of me when he scoffed and leaned over to his friend whispering "I swear he's nailing her or something, she's so up his ass." his friend sat thoughtful for a brief moment before leaning towards Ben and retorting.
"well.. if he was nailing her, wouldn't he be the one up her ass?" the two erupted into laughter and gave each other a quick fist bump.
"Granger, Cooper! have you got something funny you'd like to share?"
That only made the giggling worse and I myself was struggling to hold in my chuckles behind them.

Both boys shook their heads quickly.

"well in that case, get on with your test!"

-

When lunch rolled around, I snuck to the back of the maths department where I usually stayed to read my comics and listened to my music. It was a great place to stay without being disturbed by other people's company.

We weren't really aloud back here but it was quiet and deserted and I liked being by myself. That was about as rebellious as I had ever got in school.

I froze as I heard footsteps approaching me to my left. My head shot up as I saw Ashton appearing around the corner. I quickly stuffed my comic into my bag hoping he hadn't seen and pretended to be on my phone. He seemed unphased by my prescence and had given me a nod before pulling a packet of Darium Black cigarettes out of his back jean pocket. He slipped one out of the packet and tapped it on the back before placing it in between his lips.
"you're not supposed to be around here" I grumbled attempting to say it with authority. Ashton glanced over at me with one eyebrow raised.

"I won't tell if you don't" he said amusedly as he lit his cigarette and watched as his cheeks hollowed as he intoxicated his lungs.

I realised what I had just said was completely stupid you freaking idiot, Luke. I internally scolded myself.

I scrambled to my feet picking up my bag. Ashton plucked the cigarette from his mouth with his thumb and forefinger blowing the smoke into the crisp air. He held it out to me, eyebrows raised with his other hand stuffed into his pocket shifting from left foot to right shuddering at the cold. I shook my head no. He shrugged placing the cigarette back between his lips.

I quickly turned away.

"You don't have to leave on my account" he grumbled taking the cigarette from his mouth looking down at it before flicking the ash from the end.

Did..did he want me to stay?

I spun round staring at him wide eyed unsure as to whether I should stay or leave. I realised I had been stood gaping at him like an idiot for an awkward amount of time before I quickly turned back hurrying around the corner.

What the heck was that? Why was he nice to me? well not nice but I mean he barely acknowledges anyone, ever. He offered me a drag of his cigarette for crying out loud! I noticed my heart was beating unusually hard and adrenaline was rushing through my body. I paused for a few moments to control my fast breathing. I wouldn't have thought that Ashton would notice me. No one ever notices me.
