- Chapter XIV -
I sat in my bed that night, unable to sleep. I had begun learning the basics of my newly found affinities.
I whipped my hand through the air and came back with a tiny ring of air. Next, with my other hand, I did the same move and produced a slightly bigger but still small ring of fire and wrapped it around the air. Next was water. I flicked my hand through the air a few times and took some humidity out of the air. I added the small water ring and I had finished. I had made an elemental ball. I couldn't contact the earth, even though I was underground, so I only had three of the four.
"That's it." I grumbled, looking over at the clock and seeing that it was past three in the morning.
I rose from my bed and wrapped a robe around myself. I walked out of my room into the dark, abandoned hallway and set out for the forest above.
After quite a few minutes of walking, I stopped. I hadn't thought of the fact that Dom wasn't human at the time. At night, werecats transformed into massive black panthers and lurked through the woods.
I continued on, however, hoping that Dom would know it was me.
I reached the surface level and from first glance, it was nothing more than a dark forest. But I, with my newly heightened senses, new better. Hidden in the trees I knew lay enormous panthers, watching me.
"Dom?" I asked into the night.
Nothing.
"Dom? Are you out there?" I asked again, stepping out of the old shack that held the entrance into our world.
He's out hunting with Eran, a voice whispered through my thoughts.
I was so stricken that I didn't recognize Nick's voice.
Riley? he said again.
Uhh.. Yeah, I'm here. Can you here me? I yelled through my own thoughts, not sure how this whole thing worked.
Yeah, Nick said, loud and clear! Switch forms and come with David and I. We're about to leave ourselves.
What? No! Don't you remember the story about Claudia? Shifting before the christening or whatever? I yelled, my heart rate jumping.
Ha! David's voice joined in, Riley, we made all of that up!
What? I asked.
We tell that story to all of the newbies, especially when we're best friends with their mate, Nick explained, chuckling.
Yeah, there's no christening! I'm not even sure what that is, to be honest. Just switch and come on! Nick said.
"But, how?" I asked aloud, forgetting to talk through my thoughts.
Uhh... David, this one's all you, Nick said.
Just, uhh... I don't know! Think 'Creature of the Night' or something, David said.
Wait! Nick yelled, Riley, once you change for the first time you won't be able to be human at night ever again. Fair warning.
I'll be okay, because you guys will be here with me, I thought.
I shut my eyes extremely tight and pressed my tongue to the roof of my mouth, putting pressure on my body. My hands were balled in fists and I felt my toes begin to contort in my slippers.
Creature of the Night, I thought rhythmically through my mind.
This might hurt, Nick said. That was the last thing I comprehended before complete pain overtook me.
From head to toe was a burning sensation that reminded me of the night Dom had originally bitten me and changed me for good.
Suddenly, it all stopped. I opened my eyes and it was as if it were a different forest. The dark, Holloweenish forest that had been in front of me had now transformed into a new world. The silver light from the full moon was illumination everything in sight. I looked to the trees, and saw the massive panthers that I knew had been watching me. Two in particular I somehow recognized. One panther with bright orange eyes, and the other with navy blue eyes walked forward.
Now that wasn't so bad, was it? Nick asked.
Somehow I knew which panther to address. I looked to the one with the orange eyes and said, Haha. Funny.
That's what he's here for, David said, leaning against Nick's side, to irritate us with corny jokes.
Yeah, corny, Nick sniffed, moving aside and flashing a smile of brilliantly white fangs to David as he fell over.
With that, I drifted into the woods, blending into the night.
