  6:00am:

The sound of a pounding alarm wake me from deep slumber. Slowly I take a few deep breaths and relax. My mother once told me that the first few moments before you open your eyes in the morning are the most important of the day, because you have a choice. You can choose to either accept the days events and make the best of it or to strike war against the world. Today I wake up with a smile.

Getting of bed my feet brush against the floor. Silently I glide across my shag rug as not to wake my little sister, Lily. Today she looks so precious, her blond curls cover half her face with a small smile uncovered. She is the most beautiful little girl I have ever seen, I wish I looked more like her. Sadly I have the misfortune of taking after my father. I have plain brown wavy hair and muddy brown eyes. Not the pretty blond curly hair and blue eyes that Lily has. What's interesting is no one in our family has ever had blond hair like her. My mother has black hair and green eyes. I am not that pretty. Still I have never worn a shed of makeup, unless Chap Stick counts. (I finally convinced mother that chap stick was not makeup and was actually a necessity to have.) I just hate when I have chapped lips because they peel and taste disgusting.  My mother tells me that I am beautiful without makeup actually  forbids me to use any. Thinking of this I pull out a un-opened bottle of lip gloss that I bought a few months ago at the Dollar Store. I had been mad at her then and had almost put it on my lips but I didn't have the will to do it. One of my failed character traits and one that led to the advantage of Mother is that I cannot disobey her or an overwhelming sense of guilt washes over me, plus I'm not that great of a liar either. She knows this, but how could I do anything against her wishes after...

The soft sound of Lily's voice transports me back into reality and startles me so much so that I drop the bottle of sparkly pink gloss on the rug. Her eyes fall immediately onto the object on the floor but surprisingly she says nothing and no look of shock or for that matter any kind of interest crosses her face. Still my heart continues to beat rapidly, to the point of which I think it might jump right out of my chest. Silence spreads across the room and the only noise I can hear is the beat of my heart and the quiet tick of my clock. After a while Lily finally breaks the dreaded silence.

" You don't need that you know " a hint of disappointment laces her voice and suddenly I feel like she is older then me. At the age of only 10 she has already proven  that she is more wise than I can ever be. I say the first words that come to mind.

"  Please don't tell Mother."

Her face slowly forms a grin and her eyes dance with mischief.

" if I was going to tell her I would have a few months ago."

I try to mask the look of shock on my face but I know she is smarter than that; she caught me. Though she looks like an angel, I sometimes think shes got a little bit of devil inside her. She makes her way past me toward the bathroom we share and as she does she elbows me gently in my side. A exchange of words without a sound, it's her way of saying she loves me no matter what.  I softly mutter "good morning flower" right before the door to the bathroom door closes. Then I hear the muffled sound of the shower start and am sure that I will in no way be taking a hot shower this morning.

 6:30am

Unfortunately my shower only lasts a quick thirty minuets. I know that thirty minuets might sound like a "normal" shower but for me I could stand under the warm spray of water for days. I always find time to think over issues while I am there. The warm water, privacy of a closed door, and constant sound of rushing water some how relaxes me.

The scent of blueberry waffles wafts upstairs from the kitchen. The first day of school must have its benefits. I guess it's just my mom trying to make going back to school seem less torturous, but today I don't think I need moms special blueberry waffles to get me in good spirits. I am actually pretty excited to go back to school, I miss hanging out with my friends. No, i'm not the most popular girl but I still have a couple good friends.

"Hazel!" My mother calls to me from the kitchen.

I know enough not to be told twice. Soon after i'm bounding down the stairs, my braided hair bouncing on my shoulder. The charm necklace I wear everyday dangles along my neck. Only one charm hangs on the chain. A singe heart with a small crystal lining that shines in the light. My mother gave it to me on my 14th birthday this year. Also  I can feel the shiny lip gloss bouncing in my jeans pocket, a pang of guilt shoots through my body. For a moment I pause on the second to last step before I hit the main floor. I contemplate running back up stairs and tucking it in the safety of its drawer, but I quickly dismiss the thought and continue down the stairs to the floor.

I find Lily sitting at the table already halfway done with her waffles, for such a small girl she sure has an appetite. My waffles sit directly across from Lily's. A whole mound of butter and syrup pile on top of mine.  As soon as I sit down I start devouring my tasty meal. Even though I have time before I have to leave for school the waffles are irresistible. Mother is cleaning the dishes like always. My waffles are almost gone when I notice Lilys are still halfway gone. Something is wrong. I stare at her fork that is now circling around her plate, almost like it can't decide whether to pick up the peices of waffle or just continue circling. In fact I am actually starting to get a little nauseous.  Then she speaks.

" I wish dad could see me in my new school clothes"

My face drew cold.

My mind went blank.

The last thing I hear is the bowl from mothers hand slip and hit the cold unforgiving floor.
