Its 2020
New Year's Day
5 hour drive ahead of them
She isn't excited to meet the family
She isn't excited to stay in the relationship
Maybe she took it too far
Maybe she let it play on for too long
She gets a text
Its from Larry
"Hey beautiful"
She doesn't allow herself to get distracted
But she allows her self to think
Of all the bad memories
He came home
With no effort to hide
The drug use
Or the anger
The nights she woke up
With his hands around her neck
She cringed in her seat
Nearly causing them to crash
He was too asleep to notice
She puts the top down
That's the only thing
That's keeping her calm
It's getting dark
She starts thinking about Larry
She starts thinking about life
The life he had at the palm of his hands
The life he has controlled for 3 years now
She hears the trunk open
All of the baggage has fallen
She pulls over
He's sound asleep
She thinks
She knows
Knife under the seat
Suddenly falls
into her hand
Into his chest
She dumps him in the woods
Side of the road
She pulls off
Turning back around
She replies to Larry
"Hey"
She drives
She watches the sun come back up
A Drive With the Trunk Open.
