Chapter 1 - Run

"Hey! You!"

I dropped my spray paint can, grabbed my backpack, and ran as fast as I could. They'd never been this far inside the walls yet.

As my feet pounded against the ground, I heard the police running and calling after me. I kept reminding myself that I knew this maze. They did not.

Absolutely petrified, I made a sharp left turn and didn't dare look back. I just couldn't get caught! I thought I'd lost them, but I couldn't take any chances and continued weaving thru the maze.

As I was running, I tripped over a loose spray paint can. I fell and skidded against the ground. The dry, rough dirt scraped my jeans and left a small rip in the knee. Before I could get up, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I gasped and choked back a scream. I had been caught.

"Get up, Letty. Hurry. The law is high on our tails."

The only person I know that calls me Letty is Maxwell. Sure enough, Max was here to save the day, again. I picked myself up, Max grabbed his spray paint can, and we ran as fast as we could.

Hearts pumping, hands sweating, and breathing heavy, I followed Max, wondering why he'd taken this route, and abruptly stopped.

"Max! This leads to a dead end!"

Max grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him. His grip tightened on my hand and he smirked.

"You don't know everything about this maze, Letty."

I looked at him puzzled and followed behind him. We got to the dead end and I stood there looking at Maxwell.

"Ok. I followed you here. Now, please, tell me why you dragged me here when we should be running."

Max smiled and pointed to the two bricks sticking straight up.

"Ya see those? Watch this."

Max opened his backpack and pulled out a rope with a round bar tied to the end. He had me hold onto the end of the rope. He threw the side of the rope with the bar up over the two bricks, landing the rope perfectly in between them. He pulled on the rope and the bar came up and got stuck behind the bricks.

Max grabbed hold of the rope and started climbing up the wall with it. I watched in amazement.

I thought to myself, "Maybe I don't know as much about this maze as I thought."

Max hoisted himself over the wall and began descending as if he were climbing down another ladder. It turns out that he actually was. There was a ladder propped against the other side of the wall. I grabbed the brown bar and climbed down the ladder we started running again. We were in the open area, now. I looked back at the wall, and see a few of the older regulars doing the same thing we did, but farther down the wall.

We all sprinted toward the house and someone opened the unlocked cellar. A girl who had given me her green spray paint to use, the other day, when mine ran out, stood outside ringing a dinner bell. A few more people climbed over the ladders. I watched in amazement. Everyone climbed into the cellar, including Max, and I followed with caution.
