Two years. It’s been two years, I repeated over and over again in my head as my little toddler ran around me playing with his G.I. Joe.
“Come on, Mommy. G.I. Joe loves Barbie.” His high-pitched voice squealed as he tossed his pitch-black hair off away from his eyes. He looked just like his father and I cringed at the thought. I loved my little boy though. He meant everything to me.
“Kane Amare Quinn,” I spoke aloud to the nurse filling out my brand new boys birth certificate. His full baby face was asleep in my arms. It had taken me days to figure out what I wanted to name my new son, a secret from his own father. Ben Bruce, my backbone, was sitting next to me in the hospital. I felt him tense as the last name flowed out of my mouth. I had used the father’s last name. A father who had no idea he had a son. I put him down on the birth certificate, hoping that some day he would learn to love this beautiful baby boy.
I grabbed Kane under his arms and lifted him up to rest on my hip. He giggled and grabbed at my naturally white-blonde hair. I smiled at him and he laughed, “Mommy!” He loved me and I loved him. He was everything I had ever hoped for in a child. My 19th birthday had come and gone. Working was never an option once Ben was able to pay.
“You know I’ll support you, Alara.” Ben whispered softly as he stroked Kane’s baby hairs.
“I can’t let you do that, I have to learn to support myself and Kane. You’re always going to be on tour.” I felt the tears streaming down my face as I realized the guy I’d known to be as my big brother was going to be leaving shortly for a tour with Asking Alexandria.
“No. We’ll move you into my house and I’ll continue paying the bills and I’ll send you as much money as you need for food and clothes.”
I sat Kane down in his high chair and turned on some cartoons when Ben burst through the door. “Honey, I’m hooome!” He wailed as he and Jesse Lawson walked into the house. I ran to Ben and leaped onto him and hugged him as tight as I could. I had missed him and everything felt easier with him around. Kane was a handful and I couldn’t do it by myself. It was hard. Sometimes I wish I’d fallen for Ben instead of Kellin but I just couldn’t bring myself to fall for Ben. Jesse nodded at me.
“Jesse, please don’t tell him.” I cried as tears streamed down my face when Jesse saw my nine-month pregnant figure. He had come into town to visit his girlfriend for the weekend and ran into me at a park.
“He’s going to find out eventually,” his voice rang through my ears and brought a new set of tears.
“Either you tell him or I will.” He threatened.
I smiled at Jesse. He still hadn’t told Kellin about Kane or if he had, Kellin didn’t care enough to call about his own son. The door bell rang, I picked Kane up from his high chair after he finished his apple sauce while Ben yelled, “Baby girl, answer the door!” I walked across the living room and towards the front door. The door swung open before I got there and there they were, the rest of Sleeping With Sirens, including Kellin Quinn. He was wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the sight of me and Kane.
