Where The Witches Burned

Halloween 1554
In the small town of Riverden, in the dead of night a strange sound could be heard. Down in the valley three women stood in a circle, the village witches. Together they stood chanting a strange spell and all around them shadows danced in the shapes of both men and monsters alike. The strange chants and sounds caused the villages to awake, one by one, curious to what the noise was. All it took was for one man to look down at the valley before the strange chants in the air were joined by the villages shouts. "Kill the witches" they cried, "Burn the beasts. Bring an end to all their evil ways". Together they marched down towards the valley, their torches blazed and together they dropped them down one by one all the while screaming "Burn the witches". Through the fire drew near the witches continued their chants. "What evil was brought down upon us" they cried, "Be returned to this land but times nine. Generation to generation, father to son. May this land and all its inhabitants get exactly what they deserve". With the flames raising higher the witches screamed out with their final breaths "We curse you all"!

"So this is it" thought fifthteen year old Anna as she looked out her window up at the house before her. Opening her door, Anna stepped out of the car were she was greeted by her father. "So, what do you think?" he asked. "It's alright I guess" respond Anna. "While we think it's amazing" said the twins Jessie and Tessa. The house from the outside was amazing, it was the inside that needed the work but that's what Annas parents did. They took old houses and renovated them, that's what they had done to the last house they had lived in and every other house before that. Together the family walked up the stairs where their mother stood waiting.

Anna's family had been in the house for a week now and though Anna had lived in many houses quite like this in her life for some reason this one felt different, wrong, for reasons Anna couldn't explain. But she kept telling herself that it was probably nothing, but even then she still wasn't sure if it was nothing. Ever since her family had moved into the house the twins had been acting a bit differently, spending all their time in their room or one of their new friends houses. Her little sisters had always had a knack for making fast friends, which was a good thing because it was almost halloween, the twins birthday. That morning as the family sat down to eat breakfast their mother asked the twins who they wanted to invite over for their birthday. "Sara, Emily, Paige, Lexy and Rosa" they responded, that was another thing that made Anna feel off about this house, ever since they moved her sisters seemed to share a mind. What one thought the other said and when asked a question nine out of ten times they responded in unison. And a few days ago Anna could of sworn the twins had had an entire conversation with each other without even opening their mouths. "Speaking of friends" said their father, "Have you made any yet Anna?" "No dad, I haven't made any friends yet. It's kind of hard to make friends when your homeschooled" rolling her eyes Anna stood up and excused herself from the table before storming upstairs to her room. Everytime they moved Anna's parents would ask this question, and everytime the answer and the reason was the same. Anna's parents thought that if they homeschooled Anna it would be easier with all the moving they did, which was true. But it also made it harder to make friends, something Anna would never let her parents forget.

"Hurry up" yelled the twins as they ran up the street, "We need to hand out all our birthday invites before dark!". Rolling her eyes and grinning to herself Anna laughed and started running to catch up with the twins only slowing down when she noticed a small girl standing behind a fence. "Hey sweetie" she said "Are you lost?". Looking up at Anna the little girls whispered "You live on the witches land". "The witches land?" asked Anna "What do you mean? What is that?".
The little girl had just begun to answer Annas question when from behind her the twins called out "Anna, hurrey!". Turning back to face them Anna yelled "Give me a moment!". Turning back around to face the little girl Anna found that she was gone. "Where did she go?" wondered Anna as she checked behind the fence, but the little girl was nowhere to be found. "Anna it's been longer than a moment!". Turning back towards the twins Anna ran to catch up.

Halloween was a big deal for Anna's family, not only because it was the twins birthday but also because her family loved everything spooky. So every year, the day before halloween her family spent the entire day decorating their house inside and out. This year the twins birthday party was halloween themed, with pumpkin carving, halloween costumes, spooky board games and trick or treating. As her and her family decorated Anna couldn't help but think back to that little girl and what she had said. "Who was she and what did she mean?" wondered Anna, "And where did she disappear to?". Deciding to ask the twins about the girl, Anna went to find them. After searching the house Anna found that she couldn't find them. "Mum" asked Anna "Where are Jessie and Mira?". "Oh, um I think their at a friends honey". "Ok" said Anna. Since Anna couldn't ask the girls about the little girl Anna decided to look up what the girl had said, about the witches land. Nothing interesting came up until she came upon an article, on the history on the land that this house had been built upon. Reading the article Anna learned that when the land had been dug up to build this house builders had found three female skeletons dating back to the 1500's. According the article the three women were thought to have been witches, burned at the stake. "But what difference does that make?" wondered Anna, "Riversden is known for all the burnings of 'witches' all those years ago. What difference does the three witches make? What does it matter that they died on this property?". Still confused Anna decided to see if the twins were home from a friends yet. Checking their room Anna found them both sitting on their beds reading. Anna asked them if they knew about the girl, who she was. At once the twins answered, "No, we have never heard of her" and then went strat back to reading. "Odd" thought Anna. And odd it was, the twins knew everyone who lived on this block, so how didn't they know the little girl? But Anna doesn't believe that they didn't know anything about the girl. She knew that they were lying, but what could she do?
Late that night as the rest of her house slept, Anna was lying awake in her bed thinking of everything that had happened in the last few days. About how strange her sisters had been acting, about the little girl and what she had said. None of it made since. As she lay there Anna heard a strange sound from the room next door, the twins room. Getting up Anna went to check on them. "Jessie, Mira?" she said "Are you two awake?". There was no answer, walking up to the twins beds Anna saw that they were both taking in their sleep. "How odd" she thought. Figuring that they were both just dreaming Anna went back to bed, no noticing that both of the twins had opened their eyes and that their normal blue eyes were now a glowing a startling green.
