Okay. I cannot stand Dr. Mendel, but I will try not to add any bias!

Dr. Mendel. A psychiatrist. An influence. A "father".

Does he deserve these titles from his actions throughout Falsettos?

Absolutely not.

A few words to describe Mendel would include:
¤Narcissistic/Selfish
¤Persuasive
¤Inconsiderate
¤Disappointing

But we shall continue on now. To the beef, the filler, the actual issue of Mendel.

Mendel towards the beginning of musical, was quite childish and similar to Marvin he stuck out, in a bad way. You can simply see this in the introductory song "Four Jews in a Room Bitching." Mendel's choreography is quite bold and different from the other main characters. Although his choreography is different, his voice here is made to just blend and he doesn't seem as important (at least compared to Jason and Whizzer's harmonies). His childish nature matches everyone else's, except for Trina who seems to be quite mature.

As you may know, Mendel was Marvin's psychiatrist, then Mendel meets Trina. Now, this the point of his down fall. Seen in "Tight Knit Family/ Love is Blind", Trina is seeing Mendel for her issues regarding Marvin. Most of their conversation is normal, they talk about sex and how Marvin truly used to love Trina. During the conversation, Mendel calls Trina "lovely" and also refers to her as "darling", it is pretty weird and awkward, but Trina subtly ignores it.

Now a song later, we reach "Marvin at the Psychiatrist (a three part mini opera)". Marvin discusses his deep intents with Whizzer and Mendel cuts him off to talk about Trina (since he has fallen for her and wants to know every single piece of information he can find about her).
