CHAPTER 1

My footsteps are heavy on the dry browning leaves, crunching into the silent morning. I see his stone the one with growing moss, and overgrown grass. I slowly kneel next to his grave and begin grooming it. The sound of a breaking twig startles me and I look back to see what looks to be a boy in his late teens making his way over to me. My heart races and I quickly look back down to my brother. The boys shadow casts a dark shade above me which I try to ignore. A shadowing hand reaches out and rests on my shoulder and I look up to see a pair of blue eyes searching mine. His warmth immediately comforting me; this stranger giving me relief with a single touch.
"Are you okay?" He asks. A simple question that makes my heart tighten, because the truth was I didn't know if I was okay; I was unaware of my emotional state.
"I'm fine." I say my small reply obviously bothering him. My eyes meet his and we stare intently at each other, and his hand falls off my arm, as he looks at the gravestone beside my brothers.
"That's my mom, who is he?" He asks looking at me with an intense and emotion filled stare. His concern for me growing by the minute, I decide to answer him.
"He was my brother." I reply my eyes watering at the fresh memory. I kneel down beside my brother and look at his simple and plain stone. The boys mothers stone looks almost similar, with black and white specks within the grey granite.
"What's your name?" His voice softly murmurs.
"Scarlette, yours?" I ask.
"Evan." He replies, staring everywhere but me. The silence becomes awkward and the wind whistles passed us.
"I was just about to get lunch if you want to come with me? There's a small diner not to far from here." He asks me looking down and kicking a particularly large brown leaf from the ground watching as it broke in two in the air. I nod my head, and we stare at each other for what seems like another hour. Finally his hand reaches out and he pulls me up. On my ascend from the ground I jump up a little too high and we almost fall but he catches me grabbing both my wrists.
"I'm sorry, it was an accident." I stutter looking into the eyes of this handsome stranger.
"It's okay I know you didn't mean it. Well I mean I really don't know but I figured." He says rushing his words.
We turn on our heels and I start walking beside following him to our destination.
At one moment I find myself looking up and taking in the features of his face. His jawline is soft but slightly sharp, and he has brown eyes that crinkle up when he smiles. I look down as I realize I have been staring. We stop in front of small building that I quite cute, and we walk in.
"Can you order for me? I don't really like talking." I ask hoping he won't push the matter any farther.
"Yeah sure, what are you gonna want?" He says with a slight smile.
" I'll take a sweet tea." I say shifting my gaze.
"That's it? Are you sure? I'm paying." He says politely the cold causing a slight tinge of red to appear on his upper cheek.
"I'm sure." I reply smiling sweetly. I begin once again observing taking in his every feature wondering how someone like him could be nice. His hair is fit perfectly underneath a beanie and his eyes sparkle as the waitress comes back with our drinks. He sips at his hot cocoa and a slight foam mustache attaches itself to his upper lip, causing me to giggle. Oblivious, he looks at me funny, "what? What are you laughing at?" He asks laughing.
"You have a mustache. " I say watching as rapidly tries to wipe it off. His sleeve sound absolutely nothing, I stick out my thumb and rub it off for him. Our gazes meet as my thumb lingers on his lips, not feeling time continue. He looks at my lips, and I feel the cold delicate butterflies creep into my stomach.
