He stared into the television, his breaths short and ragged; desperate.  He was growing angry, impatient with the DVR, it was taking too damn long.

His face was no more than three inches away from the screen as it loaded the footage.  His fists were clenched, his face contorted into a look of anger.

When the screen finally lit up, his lips curved upwards into a smile, barely visible in the darkness.  His breaths hitch when her face appeared on the screen, licking his lips.

“Hello, my lovely.”  He whispered, caressing the small, blurry image of her on the screen with the back of his hand.

With shaking fingers, he hit the play button, the volume turned up just so he and he only could hear her beautiful voice.

The film started rolling, she was stapling a poster for a classroom, her focus solely on the job at hand.  The camera was shaky as he walked toward her.  She didn’t notice him until he was only a few feet away from her, she barely cast him a glance though.

This frustrated him, he gritted his teeth and clenched his fists until his knuckles were white.  But he let the camera keep going.

“Say hi to the camera, Ashley.”  His voice said.

The girl turned her head slightly so both of her ice-blue eyes could properly stare into the lens of the camera.

“Hi,” she said.

Hi, what a simple word… who would’ve thought that such a word would make him feel so alive and real.  He felt human.

He replayed it again, wanting nothing more than to see her eyes, the windows to the soul.  Her voice was a must as well, it was a voice he could grow old to.

“Say hi to the camera, Ashley.”

“Hi.”

And again.

“Say hi to the camera, Ashley.”

“Hi.”

Again.

“Say hi to the camera, Ashley.”

“Hi.”

Again.

“Say hi to the camera, Ashley.”

“Hi.”

He played it again, but paused it as soon as her gaze was captured in the camera.  He zoomed in, focusing the screen on her face.  A crooked smile hung off his features as he stroked her cheek with his hand again, “Soon, Ashley… soon.”

He grumbled a string of profanities beneath his breath when footsteps clomped above him.  He glanced back at the girl’s frozen face, his eyes softening for a brief moment.  “Sweet dreams, my lovely.”  And the screen went blank.
