Ms. Bell went over the schedule for the day. "First, we will spend the morning in homeroom. We will pass out yearbooks and honor rolls." A girl in the back raised her hand to ask a question, but Ahren wasn't listening. And suddenly, he was taken back.
The doorbell rang. "Who's at the door? Go answer it Ahren." Ahren's mom snapped from her spot on the couch, a half drank bottle of whiskey in her hand. "And if it's those dumb friends of your's, you can tell them to leave." She yelled, slurring her words. Ahren slowly walked down the stairs, one step at a time, careful not to draw attention to himself. He walked into the kitchen and opened the door, and there stood his friends Alexis and Joel. "Hey Ahren." Alexis whispered. "Come on in guys," Ahren said as he stepped aside to let them in. "Just be very quiet. My mom's home, and she's not happy.' Ahren whispered. "When is she ever?" Joel asked. The three silently made their way out of the kitchen and up the stairs past Ahren's sleeping mother, and into Ahren's bedroom. "Good news. I brought food. It's doughnuts" Alexis said., setting the box in her hands down. "That's it?" Joel asked. "It's all I could find and besides, it might fatten Ahren up a little. He's all skin and bones." She said. "It's good, because my mom didn't make anything. But again, what do you expect?" Ahren said. "I'm still hungry." Joel said. "Of course you are." Alexis said, laughing.
There was a small knock on Ahren's bedroom door. "I'll get it." Ahren said, standing up and walking over to his door. He opened it slightly and peered out. He was greeted by his little brother, Kellin. "Ahren, I'm hungry,." he mumbled. "Oh hey Kellin, come on in. Alexis brought doughnuts." Ahren said, letting his little brother come in and sit with them. "Hi Kellin. We have doughnuts." She said, handing the small, hungry boy a doughnut. "Wow, thanks! I haven't eaten in days." Kellin said. "And I'd believe it." said Joel. After a moment of comfortable silence, Alexis said, "Why don't you just report her? Maybe get her into rehab. She needs it." Ahren's eyes widened, "You think I haven't tried? Trust me, no one cares! Then when it gets worse, that's when they listen and do something about it. They only love you... once you leave them." He yelled. "I'm sorry." Alexis mumbled, putting her head down. "It's fine. I just want it to stop. I want the pain to go away." Ahren said. Kellin wasn't much younger than Ahren, and they had a close bond that held them together. They told each other everything. And when one of them was down, it was up to the other to cheer them up.
"I know, me too." Kellin said, "And if it ever does, one way or another, that's when we can start to enjoy life. And hopefully together." he whispered. "Yeah, hopefully." Joel whispered. Alexis' phone chimed. "Oh, my mom needs me at home." She said, looking at her phone. "C'mon Joel, we gotta go." She said, "And I'll bring food tomorrow." Alexis said, turning to Ahren. "See you tomorrow." Joel said over his shoulder. Then they walked out. Ahren turned to Kellin, "Joel said he, if we wanted to, he could talk to his mom about us and mom." he said, "But it's up to you. Maybe we could get out of this mess." Kellin looked up at his brother with teary eyes, "Yeah, I wouldn't mind. But do you think they would believe us? I mean, she was loved by everybody. She worked hard, had lots of friends. Do you really think that they would believe that she turned into the monster she is now?" He asked. "Honestly, I don't know. But it's worth a shot." Ahren said.
"Ahren, we need to go." Alexis said, snapping her fingers. "Wake up." she said. "Where are we going?" Ahren asked. "We get to go home extra early today. Remember?" She asked. Ahren nodded then picked up his stuff. He wasn't too excited to go home, ever since they put him in a foster home. It was just a few blocks away from the school and was really close to Joel's house. He got placed there after the "incident." He didn't like it there because Alexis lives so far away. He practically had to beg just to stay in the area, let alone the neighborhood. He has food and a roof over his head, but he doesn't like the way things changed. He can't even go see his aunt. The only one who listened after he told Joel's mom. Ahren's aunt worked in the local police department. She was the only one who believed him after he was investigated for the "murder" of his brother. She was the only one who was able to realize that it was a suicide. She saved him, and he was forever grateful for that. Ahren and Alexis walked out of school and down the road in comfortable silence. Eventually they got to Ahren's house. "Bye Alexis," he said. "Bye Ahren. See you later." she replied. Then he walked up his sidewalk and pushed open his door.
