The drive back to the Compound grew quieter and quieter as Pym and the team got closer to their destination. Head leaned back, eyes half closed, he watched his teammates either doze or fidget from the very back seat of the mini-van. Rosalie was driving. She drove like a soccer mom on her way to practice to pick up her kids. Her eye twitched and her fingers drummed on the steering wheel, anticipating the onslaught of chaos. James sat in the passenger seat, stoically gazing out the window. Bobby sat behind Rosalie, and Tait sat behind James. Bobby curled up into his seat with his arms crossed over his chest. Tait rolled a coin between his fingers. It glinted gold in the passing lights of the highway. Pym was nestled in between Sigyn and Azura. Sigyn's black hair splayed across her face as she leaned her head against Pym's shoulder. The other princess rested her chin on her propped up hand with her dark eyes trained on the pinking sky.
"Do you think we'll be in heaps of trouble?" he whispered. Azura tore herself away from her reverie and trained her gaze on him. She smiled somewhat and shook her head.
"Only a little. They need us whether they have admitted it or not. Besides, I have sovereign immunity here. I can do no wrong," she said.
"Did you have fun tonight?" he asked next.
"Yes, a lot of fun. The most I've had in a long time. It's nice not having eyes on me all the time. No one knows me here in the States, thank Bast, so I can embarrass myself as much as I want."
"Well, people might not have known who you were and you weren't being that embarrassing," Pym teased, "but that didn't stop anyone from looking at you."
That last part flew out before he could have reeled it back in, but the damage was done. He had said something that was meant only for himself. She looked down into her lap, blushing and smiling to herself. So, he hadn't imagined it.
Azura lifted her head back up to look at him again. "What about you? Did you have a good night?"
"The best. I've never done anything like this before. I thought nights like these only happen in films," he said. The princess hummed in agreement, leaning back in the seat. Glitter twinkled against her dark skin. A galaxy sat next to him, and she hadn't a clue. She fell asleep, her braided hair pressing into Pym's cheek. He looked up then. Bobby's eyes peeked through the space between the headrest and the top of the seat. The younger boy could tell the archer was smirking to himself at the sight behind him. Pym knew how it looked, but there were some universal codes you couldn't break. He remained stock still and hoped the princesses were having the best dreams of their lives. He kept them steady as Rosalie made the turn onto the overgrown driveway of the Compound.
The van jostled as it hit pothole after pothole. At one point, Sigyn's forehead bashed into Pym's cheekbone. That woke the Asgardian princess up. She lurched forward, swore, and was clotheslined by her seatbelt. Azura started awake at the commotion.
"Are we here already?" she asked. The worry was evident in her voice as it was in everyone else's faces.
"Afraid so," Bobby said, groaning as he stretched his lean limbs. "Do you think we'll be thrown in timeout or sent to our rooms for what we did?"
"Unlikely. They won't trust us enough with that. Too much time and space to think up another plan of rebellion. No, they'll make us work for their trust. To teach us a lesson. I'm sure of it. Having us work so hard we tremble with fatigue," Rosalie muttered.
"We shall never know if we remain out here," Tait pointed out. "I will go in first as a buffer. The rest of you can follow me. Pym, follow close."
"What? Why?" Pym hopped out of his seat and knelt on the floor next to the prince. Tait's steely eyes softened slightly.
"Because I am intimidating and you are--"
