“So, how was Canada?”
Derrick shrugged “frustrating” he looked around “how was…here?”
“Good…lonely” she sighed
Derrick scoffed “yeah I could totally tell by all those guys swarming you earlier”
“That was just chance of the moment, merely me being at the right place, apparently at the wrong time. I didn’t know they’d all be at the skate park…”
Derrick chuckled, “Harper, what were you doing at a skating park?”
“Purchasing a skateboard.”
Derrick laid down, his eyes surveying the scenery around him. The clouds that reminded him of a smiling dog, the way the flowers looked as the air pushed them back and fourth. Everything around him was so peaceful yet he felt so erratic, he let out a breath “in the year that I was gone you learned how to skateboard?”
Harper shook her head “oh no! I was buying one so I could learn, this guy I know, he told me he’d teach me…he also offered to buy the skateboard but I wouldn’t let him” she shrugged
He smiled, typical Harper, always being stubborn whenever someone tried to help her.
“So, this guy…do you like him?”
Harper made a face “I don’t know yet…he seems nice enough, he’s really cute that’s for sure. He seems to be interested in me….”
Derrick sighed, “Every guy is interested in you Harper, that’s the problem.”
Before she could ask him what he meant by ‘problem’ his girlfriend called him, and suddenly Harper was just someone he knew, an aquatint, no one important, and as his conversation got more intimate and he started using that four letter word that made her cringe he got up and walked away, not saying a word as he closed the sliding door and made himself a drink in her kitchen. All the while a smile on his face as he talked to Lauren, the love of his life.
