Sooga Village: Seven Years Ago
A brave ninja in training lived deep within a bamboo forest on a humble Korean island known as Sooga Island. He had been born there, having never left.
Though he was surrounded by friends, and a particularly persistent girl who had a not-so-secret crush on him, he still felt like something was missing.
Even at twelve years old, he knew that in order to become a true ninja, he'd have to leave home to train with the toughest warriors in Korea.
And so, one day, he did. He bid farewell to his friends, packed his things, and left without looking back.
It should've hurt the ten year old girl the same way it hurt their friends, Abyo and Ching. However, it didn't. For some odd reason, it felt more of a burden than a throbbing heartache.
Perhaps it was because she knew his strength or perhaps it was because he had left her with a kiss by his own free will. If he had felt that way all along or if he only realized it when he knew she wouldn't be by his side any longer, she didn't know.
Somewhere, deep down in her heart, she knew it wouldn't be the last time she saw him. And next time their eyes met, neither of them would be the same.
Not long after his departure, the town fell into panic. With their most trusted and honorable ninja gone, who would defend their precious island now?
Despite the consequences, the girl took this burden wholeheartedly. She wanted to be the one to take on her love's mission and become the sole protector of Sooga.
Being as stubborn as she was, she sought help from Master Chang, martial artist and master of Turtle Training Hall.
He warned her not to take martial arts training lightly, claiming it would be one of the most difficult things she'd ever do.
His promise was proved correct, as the first thing he did was force her to follow him up the highest mountain on the island, with no protection against the bitter cold.
Three years of complete isolation in the frosty mountains and she had only then completed the basics of her training.
Abyo and Ching hadn't seen her in years and despite their desires to have their friend back, everyone in the village knew better than to disturb her.
Productive and healthy habits such as constant meditation and daily training had subconsciously become a part of her daily routine. Habits she deemed distracting and unnecessary, such as visits to her friends and eating more than once a day, faded along with the warmth in her spirit and the smile on her lips.
For some reason, even after five long years of hell to complete her ninja training, she still longed for something, someone.
Garu was the talk of the town for many months, but Pucca's isolation and change in spirit remained everyone's biggest concern even after her isolation was finished.
When Pucca finally returned to town, she was just in time, as Tobe and his ninjas had begun to raid the village in search of his nemesis, Garu.
Tobe saw Pucca and knew that if Garu hadn't shown up by now, he wouldn't show up at all. He sought this chance to proclaim his love for her, seeing as he no longer had any competition for her heart.
Pucca declined his confession before forcing Tobe and his ninjas back into the woods. Although heartbroken, Tobe vowed not to attack the village as long as Pucca's heart remained unstolen.
Being a ninja, Pucca had sworn never to lie. However, Tobe took her silence as her oblige, oblivious to the truth that her heart had been stolen long ago.
Although Abyo and Ching helped, Pucca became the prime ninja of Sooga. It wasn't long before she gained the title of Sooga's very own Silent Defender.
One day, Pucca was scouting the village from the mountains, where she had perfect view of the village, the forest, the docks and everything in between.
She pondered over many things in her head. How long had it been since her love departed? Three years? Five? No, today would mark seven years since the start of her love's journey.
Was he ok? Had he grown taller? Was his hair longer? Had he found what he had left to search for all those years ago?
Most importantly, was he still in love with her? Did he ever love her? If she saw him, would he still have her heart, the one he had stolen all those years ago? Would she ever see him again?
Pucca hadn't realized that as she was pondering over these questions, the one who had the answers she was searching for had already arrived at the docks, ready to provide her with the answers she craved.
